With exactly one week to go before the New York Giants open the NFL preseason in the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game against the Buffalo Bills, the Giants will wear full pads for the first time in training camp during Sunday's practice. Real football!
Well, sort of. Pads will be popping, linemen will be able to get physical, blockers will need to really block and the defense will be able to get a little physical with the offense. There won't be any full tackling, though. There never is during a Tom Coughlin practice. Quarterbacks, of course, will also be untouchable.
Still, we will get to see some things that have been difficult to judge up to this point.
Must Reads
-- We will get to see if second-year defensive end Damontre Moore can continue his impressive training camp.
-- We will get a good look at the Giants' revamped offensive line. How will new center J.D. Walton look? Will any of the right guard candidates stand out? Will the Giants allow Will Beatty to take part in any of the full-contact work? How will rookie Weston Richburg look? Can the line open some holes for running backs? Will the quarterbacks have time to throw?
-- We will get to see the tight ends try to make their marks as blockers. Sunday won't win or lose the tight end competition for any of the five candidates. It could, however, help one or two of them get noticed.
-- We will get a look at the fullbacks, finally. A fullback's true job is to open holes for running backs, and without the ability to complete blocks it has been almost impossible to judge Henry Hynoski and John Conner. Today, we get a chance to see which guy might be in the lead for the fullback job.
-- We will get to see if the linebackers, especially rookie Devon Kennard, can get off blocks and make plays.
In short, this should be a really good day to watch practice at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center. Use this as your open thread. Practice begins at 1:20 p.m. and ends at 3:30. If you are heading to practice, feel free to upload a photo in our 'Fanshots' section or post your observations or experiences as a 'Fanpost.' Yours truly, incidentally, will be in East Rutherford for the next three days.
