Giants' 2014 Training Camp: Reporting day is here

New York Giants' players report for training camp today.

So it begins. New York Giants' players report to Quest Diagnostics Training Center for training camp on Monday. Players will go through a conditioning evaluation at 4 p.m. ET. The first practice of camp will be held Tuesday at 1:20 p.m.

Thus begins what shapes up as one of the most interesting Giants' seasons in recent memory. Coach Tom Coughlin and quarterback Eli Manning are back for their 11th seasons. The landscape around them, however, has changed significantly.

The offensive coaching staff and scheme have been completely revamped. Ben McAdoo replaces Kevin Gilbride as offensive coordinator, and the position coaches have been shuffled.

Veterans David Diehl and Brandon Jacobs retired. Many other veterans who helped the Giants win one or, both, championships in the Coughlin era were not brought back. Hakeem Nicks, Justin Tuck, David Baas, Kevin Boothe, Andre Brown, Bear Pascoe, Linval Joseph, Corey Webster, Terrell Thomas and Aaron Ross are among the many familiar names who will not return to Big Blue in 2014.

The Giants were unusually busy in free agency, signing 14 unrestricted free agents. Key acquisitions included cornerbacks Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Walter Thurmond, offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz, running back Rashad Jennings, center J.D. Walton and linebacker Jameel McClain.

The Giants will also need some young players who have not yet had full opportunities to prove themselves.

Will it all work? Can Coughlin and Co. make all these disparate pieces fit as the Giants try to get back to the playoffs for the first time in three years? Giants' CEO John Mara recently spoke about the upcoming season, and his words reveal the uncertainty facing the Giants as they begin the season.

The process of finding out begins for real this week.

Practice sessions will be open to the public throughout training camp (July 22-Aug. 14). Limited seating is provided alongside the practice fields. Restroom facilities, concession stands and a free kid activity area will also be available. A different position group of Giants players will sign autographs for fans each day following practice.

In the event of inclement weather (including rain, thunderstorms and extreme heat), practices will be moved indoors and will be closed to the public.
