Giants' Roster Breakdown: Corey Washington, WR

Can unheralded Corey Washington take advantage of his big chance in the NFL?

Daniel Shirey-USA TODAY Sports

As we continue our series of player-by-player profiles of the 90-man roster the New York Giants will bring to training camp in just a few days, let's turn our attention to one of the more unknown players who will take the field in East Rutherford, N.J. Corey Washington is a 6-foot-4, 200-pound wide receiver from Division II Newberry College. Let's get to know a little more about him.

2013 Season In Review

The following information comes from Washington's Newberry College football bio:

Washington caught 44 passes for 839 yards and 13 receiving touchdowns last season for Newberry. Washington was a D2Football.com Honorable Mention All-American. He became just the second Newberry player in 100 years to score 100 points in one season with 16 touchdowns and a pair of two-point conversions. He also returned a punt 85 yards for a touchdown in the regular season finale against North Greenville and had a pair of kickoff returns for touchdowns in the playoff game at Carson-Newman. Washington was a first team all-South Atlantic Conference selection for the 2013 season after earning second team honors in 2012. In his two-year career at Newberry, the junior college transfer had 95 receptions for 1,615 yards and 22 touchdowns.

2014 Season Outlook

There is a theory that Eli Manning benefits from big, rangy wide receivers who possess a large catch radius. That makes Washington an intriguing player to watch once training camp opens. He may come from the smallest, most unlikely of places of any of the 90 players trying to make it with the Giants, but Washington is far and away the biggest receiver on the roster. At 6-4, Washington is two inches taller than Reuben Randle and Travis Harvey.

"I'm the tallest receiver on the roster," Washington told Newsday during mini-camp. "I'm that red-zone type receiver."

Washington originally signed with the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted free agent. He did not last there, and was claimed off waivers by the Giants. Could Washington eventually become the type of red-zone threat Hakeem Nicks used to be and Ramses Barden was never able to become?

"I'll work, that's it," Washington said. "Keep showing them I have that 'want to.' Get after it every day, grind hard, and show them I can make plays and that it doesn't matter what school you come from."

Washington seems like a long shot to stick with the Giants, but there are two Newberry players -- Ron Parker of the Kansas City Chiefs and Brandon Bostick of the Green Bay Packers -- in the NFL, so it is not unprecedented.

Washington ran a 4.48 40-yard dash and broad jumped 10 feet 5 inches at his Pro Day. It will be worth keeping an eye of Washington early in camp to see if he can make an impression.
