Second-year safety Cooper Taylor took some reps with the first team during Thursday's New York Giants OTA. After seeing very limited action as a rookie, the 2013 fifth-round pick knows he now has an opportunity to move up the depth chart.
"You definitely see the opportunity there," Taylor said. "Hopefully I'll be able to make something out of it."
Head coach Tom Coughlin spoke Thursday about Taylor's development:
"He’s a much bigger human being right now. He’s worked hard in the offseason, he’s stronger, he’s bigger, he’s in his second go-around so he has an excellent opportunity to contribute in a lot of ways," Coughlin said.
Linebacker Jameel McClain, signed as a free agent in the offseason after six seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, has developed a good rapport with middle linebacker Jon Beason, saying Thursday that "we're on the same vibe."
McClain talked about what he wants to bring to the Giants defense:
"I want to bring intensity to this defense," McClain said. "That's something that I grew up in, that's all that I know. Running to the football, getting things right. If they've got on a different color than you hit 'em, hit 'em as hard as you can."
The Giants will reportedly be working out a former Green Bay Packers tight end, but it's not Jermichael Finley. Instead, ex-Packer Tom Crabtree reportedly has a workout scheduled with the Giants next week. Crabtree has 22 receptions in four NFL seasons, three with the Packers and the 2013 season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
