Giants Roster Breakdown: Rogers Gaines, OT

Can Rogers Gaines stick with the Giants?

USA TODAY Sports

Let's continue our player-by-player breakdown of the 90-man roster the New York Giants will bring to training camp by trying to learn more about offensive tackle Rogers Gaines, a second-year player the Giants recently acquired via waivers.

2013 Season In Review

A 6-foot-6, 334-pound lineman from Tennessee State, Gaines was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Baltimore Ravens. He was cut by Baltimore and spent the 2013 season on the Chicago Bears' practice squad.

2014 Season Outlook

The Giants were awarded Gaines via waivers from the Bears on May 30. He took the roster spot of quarterback Josh Freeman. Gaines was considered a project player at the NFL level after dominating FCS competition with his size and athleticism while in college. With five exhibition games on tap for the Giants a player like this is likely to get plenty of opportunities to show what he can do. It seems unlikely that Gaines could begin the season on the 53-man roster. More likely, he is trying to earn a spot on the practice squad.
