The Green Bay Packers, with 'ct17' in the role of general manager, have selected Alabama linebacker C.J. Mosley with the 21st overall pick.
'ct17' explains:
This pick does not fill an immediate need, and I would not expect him to start right away. But A.J. Hawk and Brad Jones are aging players who are getting well paid in proportion to their performance. Both have contracts that expire after 2015, and both would yield a cap savings of $3.5 million if cut next year. I think one of them gets cut. Hawk previously had to amend his deal to stay on the team.
Mosley is an athletic linebacker who excels in coverage, a good fit in a division that gains a lot of yards through the air. He has experience in a 3-4 defense. He was a team leader. I also considered Marqise Lee, Jace Amaro, Louis Nix, and Jimmie Ward here. I have Lee and Mosley ranked the highest. Jarrett Boykin is not a great option as the third WR for Green Bay. But with the exception of Randall Cobb, Ted Thompson has favored larger/more physical WRs in recent years (Jordy Nelson, Tori Gurley, Boykin, Chris Harper), so I did not see Lee as a good fit.
Valentine's View
This is a perfect example of what the draft can, and should, be for teams. This was a pick about the long-term for the Packers and, in reality, the draft is about setting your team up for long-term success. Few rookies have impact from Day 1. So, yes, I like this move for Green Bay.
