The 2014 Big Blue View Community Mock Draft has now reached the 15th overall selection, with 'ross_stephen' reprising what has become his annual role in our mocks as GM of the Pittsburgh Steelers. This year, the selection for the Steelers is Michigan State cornerback Darqueze Dennard.
'ross_stephen' explains:
The board fell really nice for the Steelers this year. The biggest needs are all available. So now the discussion is about the best value at a position of need. I really can't go wrong here.
As I see the Steelers needs:
LBs - Jones last year had some flashes, and I expect him to keep coming on. But in a 3-4, you can always add good skilled LBs
WRs - I know they are high on Wheaton, but six catches last year does not a starting WR Make. Losing three WRs in the last two years is a hit.
Secondary - They are old. They need help. This is a glaring need.Considered here are 1) Barr, to pair with Jarvis Jones from last year as a killer OLB combo. 2) Mosley, to shore up the ILB position in a 3-4 Defense. And 3) Dennard, who is surprising to be here at this point.
My Steeler fan friends claim that their LB corps is not as glaring a need as their CBs. My heart wants to go Barr. But my brain says to go Dennard. So the pick is Dennard. A strong press cornerback who can also play zone. He will step in and start from Day 1.
