NFL Trade Deadline: If Bucs are selling, should Giants be buying?

If the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are selling between now and Tuesday's NFL trade deadline, as media reports have indicated they might be, do the Buccaneers have any players the New York Giants should be interested in buying? The most common names mentioned as pieces the Bucs would be willing to part with are running back Doug Martin, wide receiver Vincent Jackson and safety Dashon Goldson. Let's look at each player and see if he would fit with the Giants.

RB Doug Martin -- The belief here is that Martin would already be a Giant if the Bucs hadn't snatched him one pick before the Giants selected David Wilson in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Martin was the all-around type back the Giants were looking for, and the selection of Wilson has always seemed like a knee-jerk reaction to missing out on the guy the Giants really wanted.

Could the Giants have Martin now? Should they go after him?

Following a sensational Pro Bowl season during which he gained 1,454 yards rushing, averaged 4.6 yards per carry and caught 49 passes for another 472 yards, Martin has fallen on hard times. Injuries struck in 2013 and he played only six games. This season, he is averaging an anemic 2.9 yards on just 58 carries. He has largely been replaced by Bobby Rainey, and the Bucs also have third-round pick Charles Sims.

Adam Schefter seems to believe Martin is the most likely Buc to be dealt. The Giants already have Rashad Jennings and promising rookie Andre Williams. The Bucs probably want, and considering the interest being generated, seem likely to get much more than a throwaway seventh-round pick for Martin. This move seems extremely unlikely.

WR Vincent Jackson -- We floated the idea of Jackson to the Giants last week. If the price is right for the 31-year-old three-time Pro Bowler Jackson is a player who could help the Giants. Victor Cruz and Jerrel Jenrigan are gone for the season. Odell Beckham is back, but the rookie needs more help. The Giants haven't generated enough big plays in the passing game. The 6-foot-5, 241-pound Jackson would be, physically and talent-wise, a huge asset for the Giants.

This, though, is another deal almost certain not to happen. Jackson carries a $12.2 million cap hit next season that the Giants can't afford. He is also generating enough interest that should the Bucs decide to deal him the price tag in terms of draft picks is likely to be more than the Giants would be willing to part with.

S Dashon Goldson -- The Giants have struggled at safety opposite Antrel Rolle, and perhaps a Jon Beason-like move at this position would boost the defense. Goldson, a 30-year-old eight-year veteran who has been to two Pro Bowls, is a player the Bucs are reportedly willing to deal.

The problem is that Goldson carries a $6 million salary this season and a $3 million roster bonus for next season. That is a lot of money for a player who, while useful, has probably already left his best football behind him.
