The 2014 NFL season isn't even half over. It is never too early for a little speculation about the next NFL Draft, however. We give you a little of that every Saturday when 'Invictus' and 'Raptor' combine in their weekly Power Mock, which is really just a way those of you who love to follow college football to talk about the prospects for the 2015 NFL Draft.
Today, we give you just a little more reason to speculate. Gil Brandt of NFL.com came out Tuesday evening with his list of the top three draft needs for all 32 NFL teams. What was on Brandt's list for the New York Giants? Pass rusher, offensive line and middle linebacker, that's what.
It is hard to argue with Brandt that those are all areas where the Giants could seek help.
Pass rusher. The Giants have only 11 sacks, 18th in the league. The hour glass is running out on Mathias Kiwanuka, Jason Pierre-Paul could be a free agent and the juryis still out on Damontre Moore.
Offensive line. Umm, the Giants gave up eight sacks on Sunday night. Enough said. They have made some progress there, but they need to make more. The Giants ignored this area in the draft for too long, and although they have added Justin Pugh and Weston Richburg in the past two drafts they could stand to keep stockpiling. The Dallas Cowboys and their three first-round picks on the offensive line have shown the value of that.
Middle linebacker. Yes, the Giants need to find life after Jon Beason. Maybe Devon Kennard is that guy. Maybe Kennard ends up as a pass-rushing linebacker. Maybe with the 4-2-5 really becoming the base defense for teams that use a four-man front the true middle linebacker is a thing of the past. The Giants, as always, could stand to add an impact linebacker.
There could be other needs, as well, next spring. Wide receiver has suddenly become an area of concern with the injury to Victor Cruz. The safety play hasn't been great, with both Stevie Brown and Quintin Demps having issues. Antrel Rolle can be a free agent. The Giants have rookie Nat Berhe and oft-injured Cooper Taylor (currently on IR). Will that be enough?
If the draft were held right now, what do you believe the Giants biggest needs would be?
