Reaction: Pro Football Focus All-Rookie Team.

Pro Football Focus is a great resource. They add a ton of information and give us all a sense of direction when it comes to comparing football players. They recently released their all rookie team.

How many Giants made it? A big, fat, zero. Zip. Nada. No one.

Let's take a look at the Giants' 2013 rookie class one more time and check out how many snaps they got, as well as PFF grades.

Round 1 - Justin Pugh, OT Syracuse - 1042 snaps - (+7.1)

Round 2 - Jonathan Hankins, DT Ohio State - 195 snaps - (+8.0)

Round 3 - Damontre Moore, DE Texas A&M - 136 snaps - (-1.9)

Round 4 - Ryan Nassib, QB Syracuse - 0 snaps - (0.0)

Round 5 - Cooper Taylor, S Richmond - 5 snaps - (-0.5)

Round 7 - Eric Herman, OG Ohio - 0 snaps - (0.0)

Round 7 - Michael Cox, RB UMass - 38 snaps - (-1.2)

So it seems like the only two players that would be eligible for making this team would be the top two picks, Justin Pugh and Jonathan Hankins. Let's take a look at who made it instead.

Offensive Tackle

At offensive tackle, PFF distinguished between left tackle and right tackle. I don't think that makes sense. Do they have different skill sets? Probably, but many, many players can make the switch back and forth. I'd ideally have a good right tackle playing left tackle rather than just have a bad left tackle, which is the case of what happened with this team.

Pro Football Focus had David Bakhtiari of the Green Bay Packers as its left tackle. His grade? -6.9. PFF's explanation was simply that he was the best of an underwhelming group. At right tackle, the honor went to D.J. Fluker of the San Diego Chargers. His grade was +0.9. Pugh and LaAdrian Waddle of the Detroit Lions were given honorable mentions. Top four picks Eric Fisher, Luke Joeckel, and Lane Johnson were conspicuously absent.

Interesting. Pugh's +7.1 is much better than Fluker's +0.9, so what's the deal (Diehl) here? The explanation given is that Fluker graded out at +11.1 at right tackle, but was forced to move to left tackle for 289 snaps and played poorly there, so technically Fluker deserves the right tackle spot.

I vehemently disagree. You can't just take away games from a player and state that if we took those away, he would've played better. Granted, left tackle is a difficult transition, but what if we took but just ONE game away from Pugh's log? He had a horrid game against the Carolina Panthers, where he was manhandled by Charles Johnson and scored a -5.5. Take that away and you've got a grade of +12.6 for him.

Fluker was also far more inconsistent, having eight games where he scored lower than -1.0 and 6 where he scored over +1.0. Compare that to Pugh's 5 games under -1.0 and 6 games over +1.0. Pugh is also an ascending player. In the last half of the season, he went positive in six out of eight games. Fluker? Went positive in only THREE out of eight games.

Defensive Tackle

PFF actually had three spots open for defensive tackle, giving two to "defensive interior" and one to "nose tackle." Sheldon Richardson of the Jets (+30.4) and Kawann Short of the Panthers (+16.4) were given the defensive interior spots. Jonathan Hankins was actually an honorable mention here. The nose tackle spot was given to Star Lotulelei (+15.1).

There are no qualms here about the choices. Richardson, Short, and Lotulelei played at least 500 snaps and were standouts on top defenses. Hankins was simply a role player that was not given nearly enough opportunity to accumulate the type of recognition to grade out higher. It's interesting to wonder what if Hankins was given the same amount of snaps as, say, Kawann Short (who had 520) and see where his grade might be then.

An honorable mention, thus, for Hankins, seems right to me.
