NFL Free Agency 2014: Ben Tate a fit for New York Giants?

Could Ben Tate be the featured running back the New York Giants need in what is sure to be a new-look offense in 2014?

Tate, backup to Arian Foster with the Houston Texans the past three seasons, might be the most intriguing of the free-agent running backs. He is 25, at 5-foot-11, 213 pound can run in-between the tackles, has averaged 4.7 yards per carry over three seasons and caught 34 passes last season. He also displayed immense toughness, playing much of the season with broken ribs.

NFL Free Agency does not begin until March 11 and we will discuss it in much greater detail as it approaches. Tate, however, was on Sirius XM NFL Radio on Monday to discuss his impending free agency. So let's look at what he had to say and talk about him a bit.

Tate says he is "very excited" about free agency and does not expect to be back with the Texans.

Tate was a second-round pick by the Texans in 2010, but spent his rookie season on injured reserve. He has spent the last three seasons caddying for Arian Foster in Houston.

"I'm looking to go somewhere and start," Tate said. "It's my time to step out and have my own team and get to showcase my ability."

The Giants went through six starting running backs a season ago. Brandon Jacobs has retired, Andre Brown is a free agent and David Wilson is a question mark following neck surgery.There is a need at the running back position. There is sure to be heavy competition for Tate's services this offseason. Is he the answer for the Giants?
