Mel Kiper Jr. has released his first 2014 NFL Mock Draft, and the ESPN draft guru projects the New York Giants to nab former Alabama linebacker C.J. mosley with the 12th overall pick in the first round.
Selecting a linebacker in the first round bucks the Giants' trend of ignoring that position to early in the draft, but according to Kiper, the defense is definitely lacking in that department.
"If not for the signing of Jon Beason, the linebacking corps would have even been more of a mess in 2013," Kiper writes, "and Beason isn't yet a lock for 2014."
"I'm not sure any team in the NFL has a greater need at the position," he added.
Mosley should offer immediate help to the Giants defense. The former Crimson Tide standout is ranked No. 13 overall on Kiper's Big Board and tops among inside backers, drawing comparisons to Lavonte David of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Mosley was named first-team All-SEC each of the past two seasons and ranks third in program history in terms of career tackles. He also won the Dick Butkus Award and was a unanimous All-American.
