In advance of Sunday's season-opening game against the Dallas Cowboys, the New York Giants have released updated depth charts. The biggest revelations are that Rueben Randle will return punts, and rookie Michael Cox will be listed ahead of David Wilson on kickoff return despite Wilson's record-setting 2012 performance in that capacity.
Special teams coordinator Tom Quinn said this week that Wilson "could be" the kickoff returner, regardless of the depth chart.
"He still takes reps back there," Quinn said. "That would be Tom's decision, Jerry's decision. I just get them ready and we decide how best to use them."
The Giants have chosen Randle, who averaged 7.2 yards on 15 returns a season ago, as punt returner. Ball security is likely the primary reason. Including fair catches, Randle handle 30 punts in 2012 with only one fumble.
"The other guys we were looking at didn't really separate themselves in the preseason," Quinn said.
Finally, notice on the offensive depth chart that Justin Pugh is now listed as the starting right tackle rather than the injured David Diehl.
