Giants Roster Breakdown: Junior Mertile

Junior Mertile would seem to have a big mountain to climb in an effort to make it with the New York Giants.

We continue breaking down the 90-man roster the New York Giants will bring to training camp with a look at Junior Mertile, an undrafted free agent defensive back.

2012 Season In Review

Mertile, 6-foot-1, 197 pounds, completed his career at Florida International University by making 19 tackles and compiling four passes defensed. He began his career at FIU as a wide receiver and was converted to cornerback.

2013 Outlook

It's hard to see how Mertile, signed as an undrafted free agent after rookie camp, makes the 53-man roster or practice squad. He got an opportunity by running 4.36 at his Pro Day and doing enough at rookie camp to earn a spot, but there are so many players in the secondary he would have to leap frog to get one of the final spots on the roster that it doesn't seem likely. He played corner at FIU, but is listed only as a DB by the Giants, meaning they might be considering him as a safety.
