Our player-by-player breakdown of the 90-man roster the New York Giants will bring to training camp in a couple of weeks continues today with a brief overview of offensive lineman Matt McCants.
2012 Season In Review
The Giants drafted McCants in the sixth round of the 2012 NFL draft, hoping that the 6-foot-7, 295-pounder from UAB could eventually develop into a useful NFL offensive tackle. He spent the season on the Giants' practice squad.
2013 Outlook
McCants is now learning to play center and both guards, thus increasing his value. Whether that means the Giants have given up on the idea he can develop at the tackle position is hard to say. The organization prizes versatility in its offensive linemen, though, which is a key reason why Justin Pugh was their first-round selection in the 2013 NFL Draft. The versaility could be McCants' ticket to sticking around, at least by earning a chance to be on the practice squad again.
