Brandon Collins is an intriguing wide receiver prospect for the New York Giants. He is also the player we focus on here as we continue our look at the 90-man roster the Giants will open training camp with.
2012 Season In Review
Collins was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Giants in May of 2012 after completing his collegiate career at Southeast Louisiana. He impressed during training camp, but was unable to crack a roster deep with wide receivers. He was signed to the Giants' practice squad on Sept. 4, but had his contract terminated on Sept. 10 and was not re-signed.
2013 Outlook
The fact that Collins has been suspended by the NFL for the first four games of the season due to a violation of the league's substance abuse policy clouds his outlook for 2013. Collins is eligible to participate in all offseason and preseason practices and games, but you have to wonder what this might do to his eventual opportunity to make the 53-man roster.
Despite not keeping the 5-foot-10, 180-pound Collins on their practice squad in 2012 the Giants were interested enough to sign him to a reserve/futures contract on Jan. 4. Collins has been impressive enough to believe that -- prior to the suspension -- Collins had a realistic chance at earning the final wide receiver spot on the roster. Whether or not that is the case once the suspension is served is anybody's guess. It likely depends on exactly how impressive Collins is during the preseason.
