Good morning, New York Giants' fans! Here are your Saturday morning links, including a couple of items about soon-to-be ex-Giant Osi Umenyiora.
Osi Umenyiora: I'll be NFL defensive player of the year
"I'm shooting for defensive player of the league this year," Umenyiora, a defensive end for the New York Giants since the team drafted him in 2003, wrote in an email to USA TODAY Sports. "Whatever team I feel like I can help win, and will give me a chance to do that, that's where I'm going. The money is a by product (sic) of that, you know."
Umenyiora also reiterated on NFL Network that he does not want to be considered a situational pass rusher.
... in the NFL (teams are) throwing the ball six out of 10 times, sometimes seven out of 10. Then you have a guy who is a great – or very good – pass rusher and you put him in the field for three of those 10 situations? That doesn’t make any sense. You are losing money, losing value there. I think in today’s NFL, those guys who play the run exceptionally well should be the situational players not the pass rusher. You need to have the pass rushers on the field all the time."
NY Giants hope to re-sign Kevin Boothe and Martellus Bennett before market opens, according to source - NY Daily News
Three key players from the Giants’ last Super Bowl championship team have already been booted out the door, and it’s possible more could follow in the next few days. The Giants have 16 unrestricted free agents. They’re coming off a disappointing, playoff-less season.
