The New York Giants, needing depth at wide receiver with Domenik Hixon and Ramses Barden both unrestricted free agents, today signed Louis Murphy to a one-year deal.
Murphy, who will be 26 next season, is a four-year veteran. He spent three seasons with the Oakland Raiders and played last season with the Carolina Panthers. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Murphy was a fourth-round pick by the Raiders in 2009.
In four seasons Murphy has 115 career receptions, seven for touchdowns, and has averaged 14.8 yards per reception. He started five games for the Panthers last season, catching 25 passes.
Hixon caught 39 passes for the Giants in 2012. Barden caught 14. Oddly, both are considered potential free-agent targets for the Panthers.
Murphy will compete with Jerrel Jernigan to be the team's fourth wide receiver.
The Giants were also reportedly hosting former Panthers and Dallas Cowboys middle linebacker Dan Connor today. With Chase Blackburn a free agent the Giants have a vacancy at middle linebacker.
