2013 NFL Free Agency: New York Giants' Day 2 primer

A look ahead to what Day 2 of 2013 NFL Free Agency might bring for the Giants.

The first day of 2013 NFL Free Agency is in the books. Day 1 saw the New York Giants lose an entertaining Black Unicorn who doubled as a capable tight end and bring back an old friend who might, or might not, still be an adequate NFL cornerback.

What will happen on Day 2? Let's take a look.

Victor Cruz

Despite all the hysteria surrounding Cruz, a restricted free agent, reaching free agency without a long-term contract from the Giants nothing happened on Tuesday.

There was a report Wednesday morning that Ian Rapoport of NFL Network said the Minnesota Vikings, who just dealt away Percy Harvin, "could" make a play for Cruz. Sure they could. That doesn't mean they will, or that they are even considering one. It just means it's possible. The St. Louis Rams, with two first-round picks, could be a bidder. The New England Patriots could be a bidder if their stalemate with Wes Welker leads to a divorce.

To this point, though, nothing has happened. Maybe nothing ever will.

Other Comings and Goings

Wide receiver Domenik Hixon tweeted Tuesday night that he faces a "tough decision." The Detroit Lions are known to be a suitor for Hixon. It is assumed, but not known for certain, that the Carolina Panthers are also in the mix. Are the Giants still in the picture? We will find out soon enough.

No word on anything happening yet with safety Kenny Phillips or guard Kevin Boothe. The safety market is flush, and best guess here is that Boothe might be a fall-back option for teams who prioritized other offensive linemen.

After a whirlwind day Tuesday, the linebacker market is also flush with veteran players to sift through. I speculated Tuesday about the Giants and Karlos Dansby. It will be interesting to see if Jerry Reese and the Giants are intrigued by any of the veterans on the market, like Dansby or Daryl Smith, formerly of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
