Good morning, New York Giants' fans! The NFL scouting combine starts this week and teams can begin slapping the franchise tag on players today. Your Monday notebook reflects both of those items.
A look at Giants' potential 'franchise' options | New York Daily News
Prediction – I don’t think the Giants are going to use the tag. First of all, I don’t think they like to use it even though they’ve done it twice in the last four years. Second of all, with them currently pressed up against the cap, I think the numbers are just too high. They’re definitely to high (to me) to justify using it on Bennett or Phillips (mostly because they could likely either re-sign both players or find suitable replacements at those positions for considerably less). And while I think there’s a slight possibility they’ll use it on Beatty if they think they’re real close to a long-term deal with him, that’s a huge gamble to take because if they fail to strike a deal by March 12 he’ll be eating up 8% of their cap space as the market opens. That's a huge chuck of the cap considering they will still have a lot of holes to fill.
