EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- In a season-ending game won by the New York Giants, 20-6, the Giants and Washington Redskins showed why neither team got close to the NFL playoffs this season. The Giants finish the season 7-9, while the Redskins finish 3-13.
Playing through a persistent rain neither team ended its season playing anything that resembled quality football.
The Giants lost a plethora of players to injuries. Left tackle Will Beatty suffered a fractured leg. Quarterback Eli Manning and wide receiver Hakeem Nicks left the game with ankle sprains, with Nicks possibly seeing his Giants' career come to an end. Wide receiver Rueben Randle exited with a knee injury and guard James Brewer left with an ankle injury.
The Giants had three turnovers, increasing their league-leading total to 44. They turned the ball over at least once in every game this season. Manning and Painter threw interceptions and Andre Brown lost a fumble.
Manning finished the game 10-of-24 for 152 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
Curtis Painter quarterbacked the Giants in the second half. New York's offensive line after the injuries to Brewer and Beatty had Stephen Goodin at left tackle, Dallas Reynolds at left guard, Kevin Boothe at center, David Diehl at right guard and Justin Pugh at right tackle. Painter completed 2-of-8 passes for 11 yards with an interception, and fumbled two snaps.
Josh Brown saw his franchise-record streak of 17 straight field goals made end when he missed a 50-yarder in the second quarter. He did convert a pair of field goals, however.
The Giants totaled only 279 yards of offense, and the Redskins just 251. Kirk Cousins completed 19-of-49 passes for 169 yards and two interceptions. The two teams combined to go 8-of-34 on third-down conversions.
Jerrel Jernigan was a bright spot on offense. He had six catches for 90 yards, including a 24-yard touchdown reception. He also ran 49 yards for a score on an end-around in the third quarter.
Justin Tuck may have played his last game as a Giant Sunday. If so, he went out in style. Tuck had two sacks and a forced fumble, finishing the season with 11 sacks. That is one short of his career-high.
