We are moving quickly to catch up here in our 2013 Big Blue View Community Mock Draft. The 30th pick belongs to the Atlanta Falcons, with 'NewYork!' playing the role of general manager. The Falcons select ...

Datone Jones, DE, UCLA

'NewYork!' explains:

I was hoping Bjoern Werner would fall all the way to the 30th pick, so as you could predict, I was dismayed when he was chosen at 28, two spots above mine. Even though the Atlanta Falcons went 13-3, they still had some weak spots on the roster. Some weak spots were depth at receiver, depth at running back, offensive line, cornerback but most importantly defensive end. They desperately needed a pass rush even when they had John Abraham perennially harassing quarterbacks. Now that Abraham is gone, it has become even more essential. The Falcons signed our old pal, Osi Umenyiora, to replicate Abraham's production but they still need another dominant rusher to help Osi be Osi and get those strip sacks.

Enter, Datone Jones from UCLA. Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 283, he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.75 seconds, an impressive 1.61 10-yard split, and 29 reps on the bench. As you can see, his athleticism is impressive. He was projected as a second to third round pick going into the Senior Bowl, but after a strong performance in Mobile, he is being talked about as a first round pick. He is strong enough to beat a tackle with a straight bull rush and quick enough to beat a tackle with his first step. He also has the ability to rush from the 3-tech position. Datone is a powerful and sudden tackler, and can swallow up ball carriers which will help the Falcons 21st ranked run defense. As for intangibles, he is a high character individual, and is an extremely hard worker who has overcome a very tough environment. He is a focused and driven person, understanding schemes and defensive philosophies very well. He is still a bit raw overall but with some coaching, he could develop into quite a star at defensive end, which the Falcons absolutely can use.

Valentine's View: I am honestly not sure about this pick. The Falcons could go a lot of different directions, and in our scenario maybe this is the best one.
