2013 NFL Mock Draft: Arthur Brown, LB, Kansas State to Giants -- SB Nation

In its latest 2013 NFL Mock Draft, SB draft analysts Dan Kadar and Matthew Fairburn have selected Kansas State middle linebacker Arthur Brown for the New York Giants with the 19th overall selection of the first round. That means they moved off of Florida State defensive end Tank Carradine, selected for the Giants in the last two SB Nation mock drafts.

SB Nation writes:

This may seem like a strange fit. While general manager Jerry Reese does put a priority on players with size, he covets athleticism just as much. Want to find a Robert Griffin neutralizer? Brown did it in college. If the Giants do replace Michael Boley with Jacquian Williams, Brown could be used on the inside.

This seems like way too high for the 6-foot, 241-pound Brown -- who is generally considered under-sized although his weight at the Combine was surprising.

Brown is ranked 23rd on the Big Blue View Big Board, which was last updated prior to the Combine. In a prospect profile of Brown, BBV draft analyst Jesse Bartolis dumped cold water on the idea of Brown to the Giants at 19:

As far as whether or not the Giants will select Arthur Brown in the draft, no I don't think so, at least not in the first round. I know enough to know that I don't know anything about what teams will do in the draft, but based on what the Giants look for in front seven defensive players (length!), Brown would not seem to be a great fit. I think Brown will go somewhere in the late first to early second round, so 19th overall would not be great value for him and the Giants' second-round pick will probably be too late.

Brown is a very good football player, and a good athlete, but he is not a size/speed phenomenon and that is usually where the Giants like to go in the draft.

NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock has Brown ranked as the No. 3 outside linebacker in his positional rankings. Ourlads' Chris Steuber has him ranked No. 4, also as an outside linebacker. ESPN's Mel Kiper does not have Brown in his top 5 at either inside or outside linebacker.

SB Nation does not have Georgia linebacker Alec Ogletree, ranked by Mayock as the top inside linebacker, even being selected in the first round in this mock. Character concerns or not, Ogletree seems like a more likely pick for the Giants at 19 than Brown. I can't read the mind of Giants' GM Jerry Reese, but Brown feels more like a second-round option. SB Nation also bypassed North Carolina guard Jonathan Cooper (20th, Chicago Bears), Alabama tackle D.J. Fluker 21st, Cincinnati Bengals), Notre Dame tight end Tyler Eifert (25th, Seattle Seahawks), Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o (26th, Green Bay Packers) and Carradine (30th, Atlanta Falcons) to take Brown.

Odd choice.
