2013 NFL Draft Prospect Profile: Bjoern Werner, DE, Florida State

Florida State defensive end Bjoern Werner will probably be off the board by the time the New York Giants select 19th in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

Steve Mitchell-US PRESSWIRE

Today we look at a prospect that is not likely to be available when the Giants pick 19th in the 2013 NFL Draft. I'd also say that this is the last prospect we'll look at that I'm positive is unlikely to be available when the Giants pick. at this early stage in the process I can envision scenarios in which every other prospect could fall to the Giant.

Pros

Bjoern Werner is a very productive pass rusher who racked up 18.0 tackles for loss and 13 sacks during the 2012 season. Werner has good, but not great size at 6-foot-4, 255 pounds. Werner possesses a terrific first step and does a great job of bending under the offensive tackle when pass rushing. Werner has good functional strength and should not be a liability against the run in the NFL. Good athlete for the position.

Cons

Does he have the length that the Giants look for in defensive ends? There are questions about his motor at times, especially in regards to playing the run late in games. Werner needs to work on more pass rushing moves and how to effectively use his hands to beat blockers in the NFL.

Mocking The Draft (now SB Nation NFL Draft) has a different opinion of what most think of Osi on this blog:

"Many want to compare Bjoern Werner to Chris Long or J.J. Watt, but Osi Umenyiora seems like a better comparison. Both players thrive on speed and explosiveness but also have the awareness and technique to play strong against the run."

Does He Fit With The Giants?

I'm not so sure. I don't know if the Giants would pass on him if he's available, but the number one thing the Giants seem to look for in defensive ends is length. I'm not sure Werner has the length the Giants desire. Also if there is some reason Werner is available at 19 it's going to because he did terribly at the combine, got arrested, or made up of a fake girlfriend (I kid, I kid) or some other reason that has caused his stock to free fall.

Final thought

I don't think Werner will be available when the Giants select, but it's early in a very fluid process, so I never rule anything out. I think at 19th the Giants would be very interested, even though I don't think he'll even be the number one ranked defensive end on their board, based on what little I know about how they actually think. The draft will give us a feel for how confident they are in Ojomo and Tracy. If they think Ojomo and Tracy can be special or that Tuck will bounce back they won't feel the need for a defensive end in the first round, even though if I was a betting man I'd guess the Giants select a defensive end early this year.
