2013 NFL Draft Prospect Profile: Chance Warmack, G, Alabama

Today we're going to look at another offensive linemen as we continue our series of 2013 NFL Draft prospect profiles: Alabama's guard Chance Warmack. The New York Giants offensive line played effectively based on rudimentary analysis like sacks allowed: only 20 (1st in the league), but the truth is the Giants offensive line wasn't as good as the rankings would indicate. The Giants struggled most at right tackle with an ineffective combination of David Diehl and Sean Locklear, and guard Kevin Boothe -- who had a really solid year -- is scheduled to be a free agent. The Giants could be looking at an offensive line prospect in the first round, and Warmack is the best one who might be available.

The Book on Warmack

Pros

First-team All-American. A powerful, mauling offensive linemen who really sustains blocks and has the functional strength to be a great run blocker in the NFL. He has strong hands in pass protection and very good technique. A lot of starting experience. He can get to the second level and does a good job pulling. A baaaaaddddd man.

Cons

Even though he's a good pass protector, he's not an all world-pass protector and could struggle a bit against very quick defensive tackles in the NFL. He doesn't possess the size (6'2 320 pounds) or agility to be a great tackle at the next level and that will hurt his stock. He will not excel at the combine. Can Warmack play center? He doesn't wear shirts that fit.

Does He Fit With The Giants?

The Giants are in more need at right tackle than they are at guard if they can re-sign Boothe, but Warmack could be a key to helping the Giants fix their short-yardage woes.

Being a guard will hurt Warmack's stock. Even David Decastro, who was considered one of the best guards to come in the draft in years was drafted in the mid -20s last year. Guards who can't also play tackle are rarely top 20 picks, so despite how good Warmack is it is very possible that he'll be available when the Giants select at 19.

Final Thoughts

If Warmack is available when the Giants pick he'll be the best available player. The question for a team that has not placed emphasis on offensive linemen early in the draft is would they consider taking a guard? I think right now if they re-sign Boothe it's unlikely Warmack is their selection, but he is a very good player and should be an immediate starter for whatever team drafts him. Warmack is a throwback, nasty offensive linemen and should help the run game of any team he joins immediately and for the next decade.
