There are a handful of surprises among the players cut or placed on Injured Reserve/PUP Monday to reach the 75-man roster limit. Here is the breakdown:

Placed On PUP

Chris Canty (knee) and Travis Beckum (knee). To clarify something quickly, only players who were on PUP at the beginning of training camp and have not practiced at all during preseason are eligible for regular-season PUP.

Placed on IR

Brandon Mosley (ankle).

Contract Terminated

Antwaun Molden

Waived (11 players)

Ryan Purvis (TE), Carlton Powell (DT) Chris Horton (DB), Julian Talley (WR), Brandon Collins (WR), Christian Hopkins (TE), Brandon Bing (CB), Jojo Nicolas (S), Joe Martinek (RB), Joel Reinders (OT), Oren Wilson (DT).

Canty and Beckum are not eligible to return to the active roster until after the sixth regular-season weekend (October 16). From that date up until the day after the ninth regular season weekend (November 6), players on reserve/PUP may begin a 21-day practice period before a decision has to be made whether to activate, terminate, or keep them on the reserve/PUP list.

I am a little surprised to see Martinek go in this round of cuts. I did not believe he would make the team, but who plays fullback Wednesday against the New England Patriots? You know the giants don't want Henry Hynoski playing very much, if at all. Nobody else on the list of cuts really surprised me, with the possible exception of Powell. Placing Mosley on IR was a surprise, although it has been fairly obvious during preseason that the young man is not ready to play at the NFL level. The year to develop will do him some good.
