Good afternoon fellow Giants fans. Well, good is a relative term this week. First, we had the tragic death of former NFL star linebacker Junior Seau at the way-too-young age of 43. Then today the music world lost another of its own too young--the Beastie Boys' Adam Yauch, otherwise known as its rapper, MCA, to a long battle with cancer at the way-too-young age of 47. It sure is sad to see, not only because of the way-too-young factor, but especially because of the wives and kids left behind. Mike Lupica pondered how tragic it is that former NFL stars are dealing with brain injuries, some that may or may not affect a decision to end one's own life. Whether or not you agree with that correlation, we do all understand how horrible it is. Oh, and, even more depressing....Will Bunch of the Huffington Post REALLY rains on the NFL's parade with this piece.
Okay, so let's try and lighten the mood if we can.
Do you guys agree with the suspensions handed down by Roger Goodell this past week on the Saints' players for participating in Gregg Williams' ugly bounty program? I think a full season for LB Jonathan Vilma is brutal, but then again, I haven't seen the evidence and I won't judge on whether or not the suspensions were fair. Michael Silver of Yahoo Sports also hasn't seen the evidence, and wonders out loud if there really is any. Is it bad that at the end of the day, I don't really care, because there are no Giants involved? Because that's kind of how I feel right now.
What do you guys think was dumber? The Seahawks signing Matt Flynn and then drafting Russell Wilson in the third round last weekend? Or the Redskins drafting RG3 in the first round and then Kirk Cousins in the fourth? I'm going with the latter. Because that's pretty dumb, even by Redskins standards, to waste a draft pick like that. Maybe it's just because they usually don't have more than three picks in any given draft, and just froze when they were on the clock.
Speaking of the draft, last week I mentioned how odd it was that Roger Goodell hugged the crap out of the players being picked, and had secret handshakes with some of them. Turns out this is something other journalists noticed too.The Lions signed undrafted free agent QB Kellen Moore from Boise State week, giving them, at least on paper, a pretty good 1-2-3 of Matthew Stafford, Shaun Hill and Moore.
This was an actual headline today: Woods gets free drop after ball disappears.
Ed mentioned Mariano Rivera's devastating injury today and allowed you all to chime in. I'm not a Yankees fan so I don't follow them that closely, but the one thing that stood out to me was the Rivera mentioned how much he loves to shag fly balls. Really?
I received and e-mail this past week from Men's Health Magazine about healthy "junk" foods. The first one they listed was pork rinds, which admittedly I only tried like once in my life. I love bacon, and pork in general, but for whatever reason pork rinds gross me out. Does anyone else feel that way? Do any of you love pork rinds so much that you can pontificate on what I'm missing?
Finally, I will leave you guys with this--a new "breath spray" type product that gets you drunk instantly. But since the effect only lasts a few seconds, I'm not really sure what the true appeal here is.
