NFL Is Back ... But, Could Osi Umenyiora Be Gone?

The NFL world is insane right now. If you are Twitter user you know that with player reps having voted to recommend the new CBA things are now moving forward. The timeline, though, seems to change every five minutes.

Right now, reports seem to indicate that teams can begin signing players Tuesday morning (that is all FAs -- their own, undrafted rookies and unrestricted free agents). ESPN has the latest full timeline.

As for when New York Giants players can officially report to camp, indications are Friday will be the day. That will be 15 days before the preseason opener against Carolina on Aug. 13.

With the NFL back in business, there are also rumors flying around about players who might be coming -- and going -- once business begins.

ESPN is reporting that Osi Umenyiora is "on the bubble" and may not return to the Giants.

"The Giants have said that they are not going to cut him, John Mara, the Giants owner has said that," Schefter said when going over potential big names to be cut on SportsCenter this morning. "However there have been rumblings around the league that Osi Umenyiora would be on the bubble. I think he'd like to be released to be able to shop his services to another team."

I have to think the last thing the Giants want to do is release Umenyiora anbd wind up with nothing in return for a 29-year-old two-time Pro Bowl pass rusher who had 11.5 sacks and 10 forced fumbles a season ago. Considering the extremely limited window in which decisions will have to be made, however, I would guess that is possible if the Giants don't like what they hear from Umenyiora when they talk.
