Let's continue throwing names into the potential undrafted free agent hopper for the New York Giants. How about North Carolina safety Deunta Williams?
I profiled Williams prior to the 2011 NFL Draft, and I was intrigued by some of what I read. He seems to have good size and athleticism, and his draft stock took a hit because of an injury he suffered in the Tar Heels' bowl game.
You see phrases like these in the scouting reports:
- "Above-average instincts."
- "above-average man defender, has good footwork and fluid hips for his size... Versatile safety, has the ability to play both positions because of size/athleticism mix."
- "has the speed and cover skills to eventually develop into a starter at the next level."
Yet, here is the biggest question. Despite the size, speed and athleticism discussed by the scouts, Williams went undrafted in a week safety class. What's up with that, and is he worth taking a training camp flier on?
