Huh? Phil Simms? Who the heck is that? Morehead State? Where the heck is that? Does this George Young guy have a clue? Those were generally the reactions of New York Giants fans when Young, the team's new general manager, made Simms the team's No. 1 pick (seventh overall) in the 1979 NFL Draft.
Well, we know who Simms is now. To this day, still the greatest quarterback in franchise history. And we know that Young did indeed have a clue.
Many of the choices I have made in this top 10 list have been players taken in later rounds. Really, though, the drafting of the unknown Simms is what heralded the new era of Giants football.
