BBV Community Mock Draft 2011: With The 29th Pick, The Bears Select ...

Corey Liuget, DT, Illinois.

Playing the role of general manager for the Chicago Bears is 'You're Da Man, Blue.' Here is his rationale for the selection of Liuget:

Chicago may have one of the weaker rosters of those who made the playoffs last year. They have holes at OL, DL, WR, and the secondary.

Although down the stretch Mike Tice got the unit to play better they still leaked like a sieve against the elite pass rushing teams i.e the Giants. They invested too much stock into Jay Cutler for him to constantly be on his back or too injured to play, especially in big games like the NFC championship. The Bears are probably praying that Mike Pouncey drops but alas, he is already selected. On the other hand there is Danny Watkins out of Baylor, while he does offer some versatility on the inside right or left side is considered a borderline first round talent. While I can certainly understand making this pick I think they would get more value from solidifying the DL.

This leads me to two prospects that I think would help fill the gaping hole that was left after the departure of defensive stalwart Tommie Harris and the currently unsigned Anthony Adams. Both Corey Liuget out of Illinois and Muhammad Wilkerson the DT/hybrid DE out of Temple have been rising up boards after solid workouts. Wilkerson, while intriguing for his versatility, I think he will end up being selected by a 3-4 team.

Liuget, I think, will be the ultimate choice because he is the more prototypical 4-3 DT. He plays the run well and has the ability to get after the passer. He is generally rated as the third best DT in the draft behind the already drafted Fairley and Dareus and is a good bargain at 29. The Peppers and Liuget pair could be devastating and wreak havoc on opponent’s offensive lines. While he may not be the fan’s choice I think Liuget is a great combination of BPA and need.

My take: I can't argue with this pick at all, especially since I think this is a player who will get strong consideration from the Giants at 19 in the real NFL Draft. Just keep in mind that defensive coordinator Perry Fewell stated how much he liked this player after attending the Illinois Pro Day.

NOTE: Three picks left in the first round. Let's get 'em in and get this round done by Friday afternoon. 'PlaxicoBurress' is now on the clock for the New York Jets.
