Cameron Jordan, DE, California

Playing the role of Jacksonville general manager is 'ct17.' Here is his rationale for selecting Jordan:

From a talent perspective, this is an easy pick. Jordan is a Top 10 talent. Immense strength on the line. At the Senior Bowl he tossed aside the best tackles in the country. Great athleticism. At the combine he had a better broad jump than Akeem Ayers and a better short shuttle than Mason Foster.

For Jacksonville he will play LDE and will be the next Justin Tuck. In a 4-3 he could also play DT, but Jacksonville is set there. But he could follow the Tuck model and replace Knighton on passing downs. Jags fans are hoping to upgrade their linebackers this year. The Jordan pick does this indirectly. Just like with the Giants, the front four will make the plays so that the linebackers are less noticeable.

I considered top needs for the Jaguars to be WR, DE, CB, and FS. Other needs if the value was there QB, LB. Julio Jones at the top of the wish list. Aldon Smith fighting with Jordan for No. 2. They need a pass rush badly, and Jordan will probably not put up the sack numbers of a top RDE. But what separates Jordan from the RDEs like Kerrigan who is so often mocked here is that Jordan is a factor on every single play. Watt has similar abilities to Jordan but cannot compete with Jordan's game strength.

My take: It's about time Jordan came off the board. Every big board I looked at had Jordan ranked higher than this, with one placing him in the top 10 and Scouts Inc. listing him as No. 15. The Jaguars have loads of needs on the defensive side of the ball, and it looks to me like Jordan is the best defensive player on the board. So, the right choice.

The New England Patriots are up next at No. 17, putting my son on the clock. Of course, he is school right now so he had better not be finding ways to sneak in draft research. We will take care of that when he gets home, and the Patriots' pick will likely be posted tonight. So, yes, we are inching closer to the Giants at No. 19.
