There are conflicting reports across the Inter-Google about the future of cornerback Antonio Cromartie with the New York Jets. If the Jets do wind up turning the 27-year-old one-time All-Pro loose are you interested, New York Giants fans?
I bring this up because there has been a good deal of discussion here recently about the play of the Giants' cornerbacks, particularly Terrell Thomas and Aaron Ross. Cromartie is a pretty good player, even if he is a bit of a loudmouth and not quite the shut down guy he looked like when he had 10 interceptions for the San Diego Chargers in 2007.
There has been chatter here about making a run at Oakland cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha if he leaves the Raiders. Cromartie is not at that level, but would likely upgrade the secondary. If you were General Manager Jerry Reese would you at least kick the tires?
Personally, I would pass. Here's why. Every time I watched the Jets this year commentators talked about how good of a 'press' type corner Cromartie is, but how he struggles when asked to play off, then turn and run. Well, the Giants under Perry Fewell are not playing the 'press' the way they used to. They play more zone, more 'turn and run' type corner play. Cromartie, to me, seems like a player who would struggle in Fewell's system. Just like Terrell Thomas seemed to struggle in it during the 2010 season.
