NFL Draft notebook: Osi, and insanity, rule!

As the hours tick down until the NFL Draft officially begins, the rumor mill is -- of course -- in high gear. Here is what I can tell you right now in regards to our New York Giants.

The biggest topic of conversation, as you might expect, is whether or not the Giants will move Osi Umenyiora.

One source told me today that the latest possibility is Osi to Jacksonville as part of a package that would get the Giants to the 10 spot in the first round. That same source tells me the Giants would take whichever of Rolando McClain, C.J. Spiller or Jason Pierre-Paul is still on the board at that point.

And yes, like it or not I have had three independent source tell me JPP is very much on the Giants' radar.

Ralph Vacchiano says the Giants are not shopping Umenyiora ... at least, not yet. One of my sources told me flatly that "Osi is a goner" if the Giants take JPP.

Take from all of that what you will. It's hard to tell fact from fiction at this point. It does seem probably that the Giants will shop Osi if they take either JPP or Georgia Tech defensive end Derrick Morgan with their first pick.

If they do shop Osi, the question will be whether or not they can get the second-round pick we have been discussing. I think they can, but -- again -- I have gotten mixed responses when I have asked that question.

  • Via Twitter, Ralph Vacchiano listed the players he thinks the Giants are targeting in the first round. I don't disagree with his list, except that I can't believe Morgan isn't on it. RV also tweeted that he doesn't think McClain will be available at 15. Gee, Ralph, that's not a revelation.
  • To show the insanity of draft rumors, within minutes I saw two posts on Twitter today about Spiller, One, I can't remember where from, said the Giants had no interest in him. The next, from Newsday, said Spiller had stated via Sirius radio that the Giants have requested his draft day phone number. Ahh, what to believe?
