BBV Community Mock Draft: With 28th pick, Chargers select ...

Ryan Mathews, RB, Fresno State.

Selecting for San Diego, 'hakeemthedream' writes:

The Chargers have holes to fill with the losses of Antonio Cromartie, Ladainian Tomlinson, and Jamal Williams. While taking a defensive tackle in the first round might be tempting for the Chargers, they will select Ryan Mathews of Fresno State. He was the nation's leader in rushing in 2009, averaging just over six yards a carry and 150 yards per game. Although he did not play in a powerhouse conference, he silenced doubters when he had HUGE games against Boise St., Cincinnati, Wisconsin, and Illinois.

Ryan Mathews, at 5-foot-11 and 220 pounds, is a tough and physical back with the ability to run between the tackles, catch passes out of the back field, and be very effective in pass blocking. He does not have the breakaway speed that Darren Sproles has but he can accelerate into the secondary very quickly. The Chargers will utilize him in the passing game when needed. He is a very tough and durable back who will not think twice about delivering a blow to a defender.

My take : A very predictable selection here since LaDainian Tomlinson is now a New York Jet and the Chargers were second-last in the league running the ball in 2009, anyway. This is a different kind of back than they are used to in San Diego, but he could be a big asset. I don't care how pass-happy the NFL has become, there are times during key NFL games when you must be able to run with power. If he is the real deal Mathews gives the Chargers the opportunity to do that.

'Brooklyn58' is up next with the New York Jets selection. Get out your sharp knives.
