Playing the role of Patriots general manager is Ryan Valentine. Yes, that is my son. And yes, I helped him with this but it was his choice. Not mine.

He says: The Patriots need a tight end to replace Ben Watson and Chris Baker, both lost in free agency. With Randy Moss aging and Wes Welker hurting New England needs targets for Tom Brady to throw to. Gresham is the best one available.

The Patriots have needs at defensive end, inside linebacker and outside linebacker. They have three second-round picks they can use to address those.

My take: The kid did good. I actually tried to talk him into C.J. Spiller, the multi-talented running back from Clemson who is -- amazingly -- still on the board. He went with a bigger position of need, though, and I think he got the Patriots a good player. You can justifiably argue that there is a need for defense. I think you can also argue that there wasn't a defensive player on the board worthy of this pick. Tough call.
