Giants add depth to offensive line

I think you can pretty much pencil in David Diehl as the Giants starting offensive left tackle this season.

No announcement about that has been made, and I seriously doubt anything official will be said until training camp next month.

The Giants, however, announced today that they have signed free agent guard Zach Piller. The 31-year-old Piller is a 6-foot-5, 315-pound guard who spent the first 8 years of his career with Tennessee.

My guess is Piller, who I know nothing about, will compete for a slot as a backup with the Giants, and his signing indicates to me that the Giants expect Diehl to be playing outside this season.

Diehl at left tackle is hardly a surprise. Most people seem to feel he is a better guard, and I agree. I think, though, that he will do OK at tackle.

He won't be Jonathan Ogden, but he doesn't have to be to adequately replace Luke Petitgout.
