Enjoying the Bavaro-Shockey debate

Mark Bavaro
I have to say I am enjoying the Mark Bavaro-Jeremy Shockey debate that seems to have broken out here at BigBlueView.

My remark that I thought Shockey was the best tight end in Giants history seems to have riled up some of you, which I should have anticipated.

Giants beat reporter Ernie Palladino of the Journal News sits firmly in Bavaro's corner. Here are his thoughts.

"I'll take Bavaro over Shockey in every way. Bavaro was an incredible warrior. Cool, tough, reliable. Didn't miss passes he was supposed to catch and still made the circus catches. And he did it all in the 1990 season with a bad ankle, having to be babied through the week so he could play on Sunday. I can still see him running that skinny post route, banging off a linebacker, banging off a safety, and grabbing one for 20 yards and a first down. And never a show of emotion when Simms or Hostetler didn't see him. Just went back to the huddle and got ready for the next play. If I'm making a team, I'll take him over Shockey in half a heartbeat."
Thanks for chiming in, Ernie. To me, the best point Ernie makes is about Bavaro as a teammate, a guy you could always depend on who would never embarrass or criticize a teammate or coach. Shockey could learn from that.

It seems that, for the most part, I've been pretty much shouted down by the Bavaro boosters.

I have to say, though I have enjoyed the comments. They are all passionate and bring up great points about both players.

I was surprised by the ferocity of the debate, especially since it sprung from a post intended to be about Plaxico Burress. This type of argument, though, is one of the reasons I wanted to run this site.

Please, keep the thoughts, ideas and comments coming. Feel free to use the 'Diaries' section to post your own thread at any time if you want to discuss something that hasn't already been brought up. If it's good stuff I might even push it to the main section.

My aim is to make this the best non-newspaper affiliated Giants blog on the Internet. For that to happen, you guys have to participate. If you have questions or suggestions, you can drop me a line at bigblueview@gmail.com.

Good work, BigBlueView Nation! Keep it coming.
