NFL Draft: Rating the outside linebackers

Linebacker is an obvious area of need for the Giants. The team let Carlos Emmons and LaVar Arrington go, and may release Brandon Short.

Kawika Mitchell was signed away from Kansas City to hold down one spot next to MLB Antonio Pierce, but the Giants could still use a playmaking linebacker to compete with Gerris Wilkinson for playing time at the other outside spot.

In reality, there are only three OLBs who are looked at as players who step in right away and make an impact.

Those are Paul Posluszny (Penn State), Lawrence Timmons (Florida State) and Jon Beason (Miami). As for who is 1-2-3 among them, experts seem to have varied opinions.

Rather than my going through the reports on the available linebackers, here are some links to breakdowns by several different draft experts.
