Catching up with this week's news

OK, gang, back to football today. After Thursday's 'Flight Crew' extravaganza let's catch up on a little news about our New York Giants.

• The Giants released wide receiver Anthony Mix this week and signed receiver/return specialist Domenik Hixon, a second-year player who had been cut by the Denver Broncos. Mix, who has shown some potential, cleared waivers and ended up on the Giants practice squad.

I'm honestly a little puzzled by this move. Reuben Droughns and Ahmad Bradshaw have thus far done a good job returning kickoffs, and Derrick Ward might still be the Giants best return man. Is Hixon going to replace R.W. McQuarters returning punts? I don't know.

Hixon was averaging 22.8 yards on kickoff and 4.6 on punt returns before Denver cut him loose.

Osi Umenyiora skipped practice Thursday to rest sore knees. All that chasing and hitting Donovan McNabb Sunday must have worn him down. Reports are that he will be ready to go Sunday against the New York Jets.

• Running back Brandon Jacobs will return Sunday. It will be interesting to see how Tom Coughlin divvies up playing time between Jacobs and Ward, who has played extremely well.

• Here's a scouting report on the Jets from Giants.com.
