Patriots Notes and Quotes:

  • Quarterback Tom Brady created a minor stir last week as a sore foot kept him from traveling with the Patriots to Tampa Bay for Sunday night's second preseason game, and he sat out the following game against Philadelphia.  It's not clear which foot is bothering the NFL MVP. Brady created a similar stir in the weeks leading up to Super Bowl XLII last winter when he was photographed wearing a boot on his right foot/ankle to deal with an injury heading into the big game. He declared himself injury-free during the offseason until the foot issue crept up last week. Brady did not play in the preseason opener and has missed a handful of practices during training camp while apparently monitoring his throwing reps.
  • For some reason, Tom Brady's contract became a talking point during training camp last week. The reigning NFL MVP's current deal runs through 2010. His base salaries are reportedly in the $5 million range, but bonus dollars from the contract push his yearly cap numbers up around $14 million. At some point, the sides may talk extension or work to reconfigure Brady's cap numbers; there would seem to be no pressing need to do so at this time.
  • Patriots head coach Bill Belichick spent some time discussing balls being tipped at the line of scrimmage last week. New England's defensive linemen and linebackers have gotten their hands on a high number of passes in practice action this summer. In going over what the factors are that lead to batted passes -- something that occurs in practice action more often thanks to the fact that offensive linemen aren't cut-blocking their trench counterparts -- Belichick had some high praise for DL Richard Seymour. "I think Richard has gotten as much as anybody gets. Year in and year out, he has tipped more balls than anybody around here and more than anyone I have coached," Belichick said. "He is tall and has long arms. He is athletic, can jump and has a good sense of timing of when to try and get in the throwing lane, when to keep rushing the quarterback and attack the blocker."
  • Not every current Patriot missed out on a chance to take home a ring last February, not with the team's addition of veteran CB and former Giants practice squad player Jeff Shoate on Aug. 9. The 5-10, 180-pounder spent the bulk of his previous four NFL seasons, and all of his 14 career games, with the Broncos. But after getting released in Denver last December, he hooked on with New York's practice squad in early January. For a month's work behind the scenes, Shoate got what all players work for -- a Super Bowl ring. "I was able to get a nice ring out of it," Shoate said with a laugh after his first day of practice in New England. "A lot of guys here don't appreciate it. I didn't bring it with me. It's back home." In fact his chance to pursue another ring in New England came up before he even got his little bit of history. "I haven't even seen it yet. My wife (Ronisa) just got it in the mail, so she's at home walking around wearing it and I haven't even seen it." Out of Shoate's sight is out of his new teammates' mind. Best kept that way.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "The most important thing is to rush the passer, not to stand there and play volleyball at the net." -- Bill Belichick, on watching defensive linemen bat down a lot of passes at the line of scrimmage in training camp.

Tom Coughlin says Kiwi going back to the line

Tom Coughlin has just announced that Mathias Kiwanuka is moving back to defensive end, to replace the injured Osi Umenyiora.

As far as Michael Strahan goes, here is what Coach Coughlin had to say:

"There hasn't been any discussion that I've been involved in" about bringing him back. However, he also said "We're going to explore every option."

Here is the story from the Daily News

38 Candles On My Cake, and my present

So your old pal Jim is 38 today. Luckily, I still act 14, so I think it balances out. You know how on foods they have that formula to figure out "good carbs"? Well, I'm going to use a similar formula:

Age according to birth certificate from Weehawken, NJ Public Records: 38

Age I act: 14

38+14=52

Divide by 2: 26

So there you have it, I am 26 years old, net years.

As the old saying goes, "Good things come to those who wait", and in honor of my 38th/26th birthday, I was finally able to get a present I've wanted for 10 years. Here is the first picture of the finished product. I'll have a better pic to show when its all healed.

I am thrilled with the job my new friend Darian did. He had never done a football helmet before, and he did a great job of giving it a fantastic 3-D look. If you're ever in South Florida, and decide to get inked, or if you just want to see his work check out Tattoos By Darian

My tattoo should be on his site soon as well. My niece came along and documented the whole process, I will put some of those pics in my Fan Shots at some point.

Also, Happy Birthday to Big Blue View reader, Giant fan, and dear friend of mine for 35 years, Bryan C, who will ALWAYS be a day older than me.

The Greatest All-Time Jets Moment

BBV proudly presents The Greatest Moment in NY Jets History. Back in 2003, the Jets announced their All-Time team, and of course good old Number 12 was on hand to celebrate and undoubtedly tell the "Guarantee" story. Apparently, the Jets had an open bar that day, and Joe was a little, shall we say, over served. At this point, I think it only fair that we let Joe tell the rest of the story. Take it away, Broadway Joe:

  • 1994: Jets owner Leon Hess hires Richie Kotite as head coach, proclaiming, "I am 80 years old, I want results NOW!" Jets respond by going 3-13 in Kotite's first year.
  • 1994: NFL announces 75th anniversary team, Joe Namath not named to team, but tells "Guarantee Story" anyway.
  • 1996: Richie Kotite fired with a 4-28 record after 2 seasons as Jets coach. In an interview with ESPN after being fired, Kotite says, "I thought Mr. Hess said he wanted results "Now and then", my bad."

NY Jets On The Clock

When you think of the NY Jets, the first thing that comes to mind is all the success they've had with first round draft picks. The second thing that comes to mind is how much Jet fans love the players the Jets select.

Make sure to note the utter joy on Jets fans faces as these players are chosen.

Wednesday Walk Around the League 8-20

Good AFTERNOON Giants Fans, welcome to my Wednesday. Let's take a quick look at some stories making headlines this morning:

  • Warren Sapp has joined the new version of "Inside the NFL", soon to be on Showtime.
  • Remember two weeks ago we brought you a story about 49ers 3rd string QB J.T. O'Sullivan being someone to keep an eye on? Well, according to the San Jose Mercury News, it looks like J.T. is going to be the starter.

A few parting thoughts:

  • If Anquan Boldin becomes available, does Jerry at least make a phone call? I think he has to. Toomer isn't getting any younger, Plax isn't going to get a whole lot healthier, and we haven't seen enough out of the young WR's. The Giants have some extra picks next year; maybe this is a way to put them to good use. Jerry has shown he isn't afraid to make a trade. I think it's at least worth a phone call.
  • I don't do fantasy football, it's too time consuming and I don't want to be involved in anything that compromises my rooting interest. I know a few people that are just consumed with fantasy baseball and football, and I just can't get into it. I think that report may be a little exaggerated, but I'm sure employers do suffer a significant productivity loss from fantasy sports, like my employer does from this blog.
  • The Cincinnati Bengals have got to be one of the worst franchises in sports, if not the worst. You have 10 players arrested in a 14-month span, you do the right thing with Chris Henry and release him after the proverbial "last straw", then yesterday you hand him another 2 years worth of straws? Head Coach Marvin Lewis said twice in the past month he wanted nothing to do with this guy, but owner Mike Brown signed him anyway. It's no wonder why they've never won a Super Bowl, and won't for a long time. The fish in Cincinnati definitely stinks from the head down. Hang in there for 4 more months, Marvin, a better job awaits you after your office is cleaned out in Cincy.
