Shockey to bring Giants a starting safety?

Ernie Palladino of the Journal News is reporting that the Jeremy Shockey to the Saints talks are gaining traction, and that the key player coming back to the Giants is starting safety Roman Harper.

Harper started all 16 games for New Orleans last season, his second in the league. He had 90 tackles, four sacks and three interceptions.

If that deal does go through the Giants will, obviously, be looking somewhere other than safety for their first-round selection.

What do people know about Harper?
From Wiki he's a 2nd rounder (2006) from Alabama, where he was 1st team all-SEC. He tore out his knee his rookie season, than appears to have had a good season last year. Anyone know more about him?

I know very little about
him, but I'd rather look at their LBs and see if there's something they have to offer; that way we could draft 'fresh legs' for the safety position.

I wouldn't even mind (with Reese's current draft picking ability) getting a pick in this year's draft.

And there are a million ways to skin a cat.

We didn't even have a chance for the "perfect season", but we did have the perfect ending.

Sounds like a risk
The only stuff I can find on him makes Harper sound risky. The torn ACL may have cost him some speed, and the various reports I can find say he doesn't cover well.

Shockey for Harper
If the Giants do trade for Harper, who had a torn ACL and missed 2006, do you think the Giants still go after an LB or does the offense become a higher priority?  Harper hasd some nice numbers last year, but still no proof that he is the answer at safety for anyone.

I know Boss and Matthews have shown a good catching/blocking tandem potential, but maybe we look at WR again (crap, I can't believe I am even suggesting that) or an offense lineman.

I am just getting scared that Reese needs to make certain that Eli has enough weapons and Shockey (although underutilized) was always a nice outlet.

Making this trade would certainly make me feel okay if a good WR or OL dropped and the GMEN thought about pulling the trigger.  It gives them more flexibility come draft day for sure.  Which is what any GM needs/wants.

Also, since everyone on the planet knows the giants are targeting Phillips, I never feel like that is a good position to be in anywhere in the first round, because teams will leverage that knowledge against other teams.

Based on what we know of Reese
so far, there's a good chance whatever he does will surprise us all.  Hmm.  Might an offense-minded coach like Payton See Moss as a guy he could develop? (I know he's set at WR.)  Suppose Reese packages Moss and Shockey, what could we get in rerurn?  Wild and unlikely speculation?  Granted.  I just have a gut feeling that Reese will surprise.  Then again, he'll surprise (me at least) if he opts for pure vanilla.

Shockey
Today's Daily News reveals that both the Seahawks and Atlanta are interested in dealing for Shockey. The first day of the draft will be interesting.

I'll side with Ed on
Harper. From the things I've read it seems like a losing situation for us to let Shockey go and get this guy. Medium/good reviews at best. We wold surely be on the losing end of that deal; it's much like a slap in the face really.

For the record, I don't particularly like what Knight or Harper bring to the table. Hopefully they'll prove me wrong if we get Harper, too, but I just don't see Knight or Harper doing too much with us.

We didn't even have a chance for the "perfect season", but we did have the perfect ending.
