Giants will have three sixth-round picks

Per Ralph Vacchiano's Blue Screen blog, the Giants have been granted an extra "compensatory" draft pick in the sixth round of this year's draft.

That gives the Giants three sixth-round picks (28th, 32nd and 33rd in that round). One of those came from the Ryan Grant trade.

Let's see if GM Jerry Reese can use these picks to work his late-round magic again this year.

I always maintain that it is the ability to find impact players in late rounds that can make a draft special, and Reese proved that last year.

You will recall that Kevin Boss was a fifth-round choice, and both Ahmad Bradshaw and Michael Johnson were taken in the seventh round.

We can only hope the sixth round is that kind to the Giants this time around.

Oh, and don't ask me to explain the compensatory picks. I can't. Go read Vacchiano or Mike Garafolo if you need to know more about how that works.

Here is the explanation
a 6th round pick for Jay Feely sounds about right.....

As compensation for losing Jay Feely, Visanthe Shiancoe and Frank Walker in 2007, the Giants now own the 33rd pick in the sixth round. The team lost those three and only signed two free agents a year ago -- Kawika Mitchell and Anthony Wright. That gives them one compensatory pick this year.

Under terms of the NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in a year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks.

Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a club is covered by this formula.

Last spring, general manager Jerry Reese used the Giants' seven draft picks to select seven key contributors to the team's Super Bowl run.

OK, smarty-pants
Now try explaining the formula itself and how they determine who gets what picks. LOL!!!

hah
i like both Vacchiano and Garafolo describe the compensatory pick formula as impenetrable.  tho i guess if even the gm's cant figure it out theres no point in worrying about it.

who cares HOW we got the picks
With Reese drafting, that's 3 more starters for our next Super Bowl team! ;)

Yes, more picks is good
Don't expect the success of last year, that was exceptional.  As we all know, depth is key in today's NFL - with extra draft picks you can have more depth.  With an extra 6th round Reese can gamble on someone from a small school or with a troubled past, or maybe even an injury, and wind up with a sleeper price

i understand the general concept
how many free agents you lose vs. how many you sign, and if the number is negative than you get compensatory picks, as long as the free agents you signed are not better than the ones you lost. so we lost gibril wilson, kawika mitchell, and reggie torbor, but signed david carr and sammy knight. Now lets hope david carr gets barely any playing time, and hopefully not in the playoffs either, that would leave sammy knight.. meaning we should score one or two compensatory picks next year. am i right?

oh and I don't think last year's draft class can be a fluke... we must have some seriously talented scouts out there.. and Jerry Reese seems to have great intuition for it. I think this year's draft class isn't AS good as last years.. because last year was just ridiculous. our seventh round draft pick was our leading rusher in the SUPERBOWL. we can't hope to get that lucky again but I trust that we'll end up with some talented players and some absolute steals.
