All of a sudden, a flurry of news

Out of nowhere, Sunday became a big news day for the Giants.

Pro Football Talk reported that Chris Snee wants a new contract and may skip the "voluntary" workouts that begin today.

Boy, if he does decide to pass on the workouts that sure will be a fun story. Remember, Snee is coach Tom Coughlin's son-in-law.

You have to wonder which side the coach would be on. As coach, of course, he wants Snee at the workouts. On the other hand, a raise for Snee sure would help out TC's daughter and his two grandsons.

All I know for sure is that a Snee contract dispute would make for some lively Coughlin family discussions around the old dinner table.

Another bit of news reported by both PFT and by Ralph Vacchiano in his Blue Screen blog is that Osi Umenyiora might hold out looking for a new contract.

From Vacchiano.

"A lot of people who know him are absolutely convinced he's going to holdout from training camp this summer if he doesn't get a new contract. In fact, someone who talked to him recently told me 'I guarantee you he's not coming to camp.' "

I've been afraid of this, with the Umenyiora having made the Pro Bowl and the Giants being defending Super Bowl champs. But, Osi has 5 years left on his contract. I don't see how he wins this fight.

From PFT.

Umenyiora has five years left on his most recent deal. Five years. He has no leverage on this one, unless he plans to owe the team bonus money and/or fines and, ultimately, give up game checks.

All the while, the Giants will continue to hold his rights for five more years.

Surely, the Giants won't cave on this one. If they do, what's the point in signing players to long-term deals?

Keep an eye on this one, though. If Osi really wants a raise, it might get ugly.

Here's a rumor, again from the very busy Mike Florio at PFT, that Tiki Barber is being slapped down by NBC.

Per Florio, it seems that Barber might be getting removed from the Today show.

If that turns out to the case, will anybody except his brother, Ronde, feel bad for him? I know I won't.

Snee's a good player and I'd like to see him stay.
How much time left on his contract?
Except for the Eagles game Osi didn't have a great year, despite being a Pro Bowler.  He should have a great year before looking for more $.

Looka like Reese is facing more problems than we anticipated.  Maybe that's good if he has to work his magic by wheeling and dealing with other teams.  He sure can't satisfy all the guys looking for more bucks.

As for Tiki, I've seen him a few times on TV.  He was a stiff, so I'm sot surprised if the network cuts him.  Maybe they thought he'd be another Joe Garagiola?  Unlikely.  More just a blunder on its part.

Snee
Has one year left on his rookie deal. He is, apparently, looking to get a new deal now instead of waiting for that contract to expire.

In this case, I would be all for giving him a long-term contract. He can anchor that line for years to come.

Snee probably deserves a new contract
He's been an outstanding player since his rookie year. The only time any one ever remembers an offensive lineman is 1) stupid penalties 2) Pancake 3) they're the head coaches son in law.  Snee went through a very minor spell of penalties ,I think around the time of the Vikings game. Other than that he's been super solid , you never hear his name unless it's because of his relationship with the coach and in this market he'd have already been eaten alive if he were anything less than a human wall anchoring the middle of the line........Give him his due or , someone else  will.

PFT is fun
but isnt florio notorious for mentioning every silly rumor under the sun, claiming them as his if they come true and then blowing off the rest he gets wrong?

i can see osi wanting more money and i can see snee's contract getting renegotiated if hes in the last year of his rookie year but i wouldnt fret about holding out.  yet anyway.

I think so
He jumps on a lot of stuff w/out proof. Sometimes he's right, sometimes not. In this case, he was wrong. I went with it only because it was fun to talk about. PFT is a great site, but you do have to take it with a grain of salt.

PFT
is a great source of info. You have to learn to read it and figure out when he really has something, and when he is just reaching for something to get attention.

If this is true
Per Florio, it seems that Barber might be getting removed from the Today show.

And if recent history is any indication, ya gotta believe that the "Today" show is now perfectly positioned to make a late season run at an Emmy this year.
