Knight shines on the Giants

According to published reports, Sammy Knight is officially a Giant.

Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger says the contract is a three-year, $5.15 million dollar deal including a $1.25 million signing bonus.

The Giants are, as you would expect, saying they are thrilled to have Knight.

"We're excited to have a veteran of Sammy's caliber joining our secondary," GM Jerry Reese said in the team's release. "We were attracted to how smart he plays and how productive and physical he plays. We think he will thrive in our defensive schemes. He brings a lot of leadership to the team, especially to the secondary, and he is a real pro."

What do you guys think?

Mentor
I think we'll keep him for maybe 2 years then see what happens..
hopefully he'll do a good job with Johnson, Butler and even Dahl if he's still on the roster

i like it
i still think safety is a major need which will need to be addressed come draft time, but it will be nice to plug-in a few youngsters, like johnson and whoever gets drafted, with a veteran like knight.

reese is a real cheap-ass huh?  not that there is anything wrong with that <cough, Super Bowl Championship, cough>

Nice Move
He was cost effective, known to be smart, decent sized (6-1, 220), has a nose for the ball (4 INTS last year) and is a good tackler (lead Jacksonville last year with 130-something) and played on a good defense at Jacksonville.

I know he is not the youngest guy, but I think this is a smart move and the right guy at the right price.  Hopefully, he can give the young guys some mentoring and still be highly productive.

Anybody that picks 4 passes off is going to have to be accounted for by the QB and that extra pause just gives the d-line more time.

Good signing
Gibril was a no brainer to turn away due to that contract, and Knight will give them a nice veteran presense. I can see Johnson and Knight starting, with Butler and a draft pick/free agent being the backups. Question: will the Giants bring RW back now? They already have four keepers at corner on the roster, and will draft one certainly to bring it to five. Does Q stick?

im pretty sure that RW
is owed something ridiculous, like $4M?

his days as a Giant are over.

RW
is owed $4.25 million. Not a chance he comes back to the Giants with that contract. For about 25% of that money, maybe, but no way the Giants give him the big payday.

Possibly renegotiate
They don't have another proven punt returner.  Hixon is a possibility, but punts are different from kickoffs.

I would bet on Madison being gone before RW

OK, But
Do you really want to use your number 1 corner as a punt returner?  Wasn't that how Sehorn got messed up?

Ross as PR
No way TC puts Ross back there. You don't expose every down players like that. It's why I thought the Vikings were insane to let Adrian Peterson run back kickoffs. Personally, I think Domenic Hixon would do a great job returning punts. Hell, Sinorice Moss could probably do it, too. He was terrific at it in college if I remember correctly. No reason to expose an important player like Ross.

another possibility
is Pope - he was basically practice squad last year, suited up for one playoff game when the secondary was decimated, but he is supposed to have blazing speed.  Maybe a way for him to get on the team and prove himself while developing cover skills.

Anyone know more about him?

I'm iffy about this one...
I like that we have a veteran, but I still hope we draft a CB or safety.  What the Jaguars guy wrote about the TE's worries me a big bit.

eh
whatever, he's a stop-gap, he's a temporary solution until we get a better safety in the draft and michael johnson develops. does anybody know what happened to the deangelo hall deal?? is that even still a possibility?

I love the statement
It is so wonderfully boiler plate PR - I mean can you imagine any team putting out a press release "OK - we know he sucks, he's old and slow and couldn't cover anyone, but he's cheap, so we grabbed him."

Not that I am saying that's the case with Knight, I don't know - I just was amused at the press release.
