Hall will be a Raider, not a Giant

Forget about having DeAngelo Hall in your New York Giants' secondary next season. The Atlanta Falcons have traded Hall to the Oakland Raiders for a second-round draft pick.

This seems like a typical Al Davis move. Take the talented, but troubled player and see if the misfit can help return the Raiders to glory.

It didn't seem likely that Hall would be heading to the Giants, anyway. It seems likely now, though, that GM Jerry Reese will have to take a cornerback early in this year's draft.

Here are a few more notes for your Sunday reading pleasure.

• I didn't mention it the other day, but I was glad to see Derrick Ward re-sign with the Giants.

Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw give the Giants a terrific 1-2 punch in the backfield, of course. Durability is always a question with Jacobs, and we really have yet to see how much of a pounding Bradshaw can take. Ward, who was terrific filling in for Jacobs last season, is a much better third option than Reuben Droughns. His signing also enables Jerry Reese to concentrate on the team's defensive needs in the upcoming draft.

• The Oakland Raiders have signed ex-Giant William Joseph. Whatever they are paying him, it's wasted money.

• A quick shout out to our own 'bk0831,' who is occasionally posting at his own Giants' blog, these days. Check out 'bk's' FootballGiants.net, but only if you promise to come back here.

No stealing my readers, BK.

• A little more on David Carr. ESPN's Pat Yasinskas had a revealing talk with Carr in which the Giants new backup QB admits that maybe he hasn't always given coaches and teammates his best effort.

Carr said the best thing that has happened to his career is watching Vinny Testaverde last season in Carolina.

He showed me what it really means to be a true professional. He showed me it's about more than being a great athlete. It's about preparing yourself and carrying yourself the right way. Those were the things Chris (Palmer) always was telling me in Houston, but I wasn't always listening. This time, I'm going to listen.''

If Carr doesn't listen to Palmer, the Giants' quarterbacks coach, and head coach Tom Coughlin he will find himself out of a job quickly. He may also find himself out of a career.

Sunday Notes
I was sorry to see Hall go to the Raiders for their second round pick.  Sounds like he is going to get paid just less than Asante Samuels money.  In the end probably good the Giants didn't get involved even though I was one of the guys pushing for his signing.

I do agree that the Gmen are going to have to grab a CB early. In the first 4 rounds I think it is going to be all defense for the Gmen (LBs, DT, S, CB).  I know we have debated about best guy available, but in my opinion that best available is going to have to be rated significantly higher for the Gmen to not draft for need.

I think Wards resigning makes a ton of sense and is a great move.  I think he really shores up the RB situation.

What do you guys think about everyone saying the Gmen are going to take Trevor Laws from ND.  I watched him play and he is solid, but I am not sure if he is worth a 1st round pick.  He does have a great motor, good size and strength.

Ward
Really terrific that they were able to resign him. His coming back obviously says there wasn't the interest that his agent and him expected, because he knows he is third on the depth chart behind BJ and the emergence of Bradshaw. But that can change quickly as we all know.....a great resign and a great price.

Agreed
Ward keeps one of the Giants biggest strengths intact at a great price. I love Jacobs, but his style is not conducive to staying healthy. Plus I love keeping anyone who says that they want to stay with the NYG for their entire career. This was a great (re)signing.

Wow
I get back from Australia to find that I missed the signing of David Carr (not to mention some excellent photos of my new favorite Giants fan a few days ago...sorry uncle Bob, you're in 2nd now). I like the Carr signing a lot, he is exactly the kind of backup QB I've been advocating, someone who can step in and potentially win some games for you, especially since he has something to prove. Sounds like he's pretty happy about the situation too.

Also, while in Australia, I observed an Australian guy wearing a Giants hat and asked if he was a fan, and he replied something along the lines of he likes  New York City and heard that the Giants just shocked the world so he decided to buy the hat (I was drunk at the time, so I don't fully remember the convo). It was pretty awesome though.

I have to admit
I honestly did not think Ward would be back. Glad he is re-signed, the Giants have proven that you can never have enough running backs or defensive ends

I hear the Giants will be drafting DE's in the odd rounds, RB's in the even rounds
