Gibril going, going ... gone?

Giants' fans don't want to hear this, but ... the Star-Ledger's Mike Garafolo seems to think there is a good chance the team will lose Gibril Wilson.

From Garafolo:

Wilson is looking is looking for a contract that will pay in the $5 mil per year range. The Giants, much as they'd like to have him back, aren't going to match that number. To them, that would be overpaying a guy who's a decent safety but not one of the elite. (Not that Wilson is asking for a Bob Sanders-like, $7 mil-plus per year deal, but still his expectations are up there.)

This means the Eagles and Jags -- and likely a few other teams -- are officially licking their chops to get a crack at Wilson, who could easily take a short drive down to Philly and step right into a defense that is very similar to the Giants' scheme.

Garafolo seems to think that the Giants need to get Wilson's signature on a contract before free agency starts or face the prospect of having to replace him.

Yikes! I'm sure that isn't the way GM Jerry Reese wants to start his off-season.

As much as I'd like to keep Wilson, I'm
not going to second guess Reese after last year.  He has earned that kind of respect.  I remember all the alarm with Pettitgout.  Let's hope Wilson turns out like O'Hara did last year.  If not, goodbye and good luck.

As tough as it might be to lose him, you can't pay a guy more than he's worth. At five million, he'd be making more than Stray.  Besides what would it say to guys the Giants have locked up but are looking for more if you paid him that kind of money?

Hey, at least we kept Spags.

Solid
is how I would describe Wilson. Very good is how he wants to be paid. I'd take a pass on him at that amount, and Reese will do the same. There are a few safties out there who could replace him and at less money. I totally understand him wanting to get the most money, but the Giants would be foolish to give it to him.

Off topic, but...
I was just thinking back to what the pontificators said about the Giants' 2007 draft.  In particular, Mel Kiper, Jr. gave it a C-. (Makes me wonder how they keep their jobs. It's akin to the performance of most meteorologists.)  If interested, I found a post on the Giants' website that lists all of the grades given by the various experts: http://boards.giants.com/forums/732489/ShowThread.aspx

Kiper = DUMB
#4 "Bad Decision" from Kiper's 5 Good/Bad Decisions article right after the '07 draft:

"I was surprised the New York Giants took cornerback Aaron Ross instead of left tackle Staley. The future of the Giants rides on QB Eli Manning staying upright, and Staley would have done a good job of protecting Manning's blind side."

How'd Joe Staley do at keeping Alex Smith upright?

Kiper is a jerk
He hates to give anyone credit if they make a decision he disagrees with, even if it turns out to be a good one. For the Giants, this was a good decision. Ross is an excellent player and they had a good offensive line. Kiper started hammering Reese as soon as this pick was made, and he's still doing it even though the Giants won the Super Bowl. Personally, I pay little to no attention to anything Kiper has to say.

Sorry Gibril
But you aren't worth that kind of money
