Now you can buy a 19-0 commemorative book

Well, we've had the 19-0 shirts. Now, we have a commemorative 19-0 book you can already buy from Amazon.

This was written by the Boston Globe.

I don't know about you guys, but all of this "assumption" of 19-0 is starting to tick me off. Yes, the Patriots SHOULD win. If, however, the Giants pull off the upset crap like this will make it even sweeter.

Major kudos to Ryan, a Cowboys fan who was aggravated enough by this to send it along. So, we get to be mad at the Patriots and learn that not all Cowboys' fans are evil at the same time. How about that?

Capitalism at its finest
If you think about it..no don't, it's too silly to even think about.  The Patriots aren't putting this stuff out, the local rag is.  It's entire premise hasn't even happened yet, let alone written about...but they want you to pre-order and send in your money NOW.  (The T-shirt thing posted earlier was funny, because it skirted the NFL licensing bit, but this is just plain silly.)

And your Cowboy friend's team has already anointed itself Greatest Team Ever: The Dallas Cowboys Dynasty of the 1990's, so he's got his own issues.

terribly sorry...
you'd think that of all newspapers the boston globe should know better than to tempt fate like that.

this is along the lines of the unpardonable sin of christmas decorations going up before halloween.  as a patriots fan you have my abject apology for the tastelessness from an otherwise quality newspaper.  (well the professional home of charlie savage anyway...)

which paper was it that had the "Dewey defeats Truman" headline?  ah that was chicago, never mind...

by circusboy on Jan 29, 2008 12:41 AM EST reply actions

But
I do agree that the Globe is a good paper overall though. The only thing that usually drives me nuts in that paper is how much some of the writers are in the back pocket of Sox management, but I'm sure it angers many Sox fans too.

by potroast on Jan 29, 2008 9:30 AM EST up reply actions

disclosure
The New York Times owns the Boston Globe as well as being a minority stakeholder in the Boston Red Sox.  They have a vested interest in what gets printed in the sports section and think if they disclose that fact once in a while it gives them a free pass to stack the deck.

It fries me that there's certainly a lot of ink spilled trying to convince the Globe's readers that Boston is first and foremost a baseball town, in spite of the Patriots' ratings that prove otherwise.  Columnist Dan Shaughnessy semi-regularly prints some fluff piece on the Red Sox being the town's true love.  It might be his, and the Globe's, (and heck I follow the Sox and cheer them on too,) but Joe Fan is heart, soul, and gut into the Patriots.

Keep the faith!

by Marima on Jan 29, 2008 9:47 AM EST up reply actions

really?
I was unaware of the connection of the NY Times to the sox.  damn, that would be like the globe owning a piece of the colts.

how long has that been the case?  I'm apparently a bit out of touch with this...

by circusboy on Jan 29, 2008 11:55 AM EST up reply actions

that's why they have the worst sports section
in town.

the daily news, post, newsday and star-ledger all blow the Times out of the water with their sports coverage.

by SBakerTheTouchdownMaker on Jan 29, 2008 11:58 AM EST up reply actions

but
boston is and always will be a baseball town.

the patriots could win the super bowl for the next 500 years in a row and the first love of boston would remain the sox.

it's a lot like chicago.  the cubs always come before the bears (and of course the white sox).

by SBakerTheTouchdownMaker on Jan 29, 2008 11:57 AM EST up reply actions

to be fair
So is New York. In fact, I'd say New York is the biggest baseball town in the country. We don't have ANY college football teams we care about, and I wager that if you took a poll around the city of what NY team is their absolute favorite, the Yankees would come in first and the Mets would come in second, with the Giants in 3rd, followed by the Jets  and Knicks.

by cjmulrain on Jan 29, 2008 1:33 PM EST up reply actions

i disagree
right now that may be the case since the Knicks have been pathetic but even now i still would argue that New York is a basketball town.  The Knicks are the one team that the entire city can unite around and are the only game in town (nobody gives a shit about the Nets).  during the "glory" years of the 90s when the knicks were a contender, the Garden was by far the hottest ticket in town.  also, remember when St. John's was good?  the Garden was a big deal then as well.

plus, NYC is the flagship city for basketball.  think about Rucker Park and all the other historic basketball sites all around the City.

there is of course a huge Yankees following but there are just as many people that either hate the Yanks or root for the Mets.  The Giants and Jets are split and their fanbases extend to Long Island and Jersey.

i know the Knicks are pathetic, but I still think when talking specifically about New York City (the City itself that is) basketball is the top game in town.

by SBakerTheTouchdownMaker on Jan 29, 2008 7:56 PM EST up reply actions

I still say baseball
I agree that the Knicks are the one team in town the whole city can rally around, and I absolutely remember the St. John's was good, b/c I had season tickets since the Malik Sealy days, but I still think baseball is the #1 sport. True, NY is a great basketball city, but think of all the baseball history it has going back to the the early days. Baseball was invented in NY, the Giants were the first great team of the 20th Century, the Yankees became the greatest franchise in sports with some of the most famous names in sports history, and the late 40's into the 50's were absolutely OWNED by the NY baseball teams.

Just as a comparison: I wasn't alive, but I have a feeling if you went back and looked at old sports pages, you'd find that the Mets 1969 World Series was more heavily covered than either the Jets SB  or the Knicks NBA Championship that year. Similarly, I'd bet the 1986 Mets were more heavily covered than the '86 Giants. And I know for a fact that the 2000 World Series was more heavily covered than either the 1999 NBA Championship (featuring the Knicks) or the 2000 Super Bowl. And those are just years when multiple NY teams were in championships...add in the late 70's, '96 and '98, and '01 Yankees, and you have a decent amount more coverage/interest in baseball.

by cjmulrain on Jan 30, 2008 12:31 AM EST up reply actions

that's a good point
the mets were a really big deal in '86.  plus the yanks parades and all that good stuff.

i also forgot about the 50's, when obviously baseball was the top dog with the dodgers/giants/yanks.

it's an interesting argument.  i think we can all agree that's why NYC is the best sports city in the country.

Shaughnessy: Sox wins are better than Pats
Funny that I mentioned this just a couple of days ago, but Boston Globe's Dan Shaughnessy just wrote his semi-annual piece about how the Red Sox wins are better than any Pats wins  and will still be better even if the Pats go 19-0.  And this was in the Pats-Giants special section of the paper.  Such a dope.
Keep the faith!

by Marima on Feb 1, 2008 7:47 AM EST up reply actions

this is what happens
when a long suffering city finally gets a taste of success.

god help us if the cubs ever win the world series.

just as a side note, im not sure about all other cities but the boston sports writers have to be the biggest homers i have ever seen.  especially shaughnessy who has basically guaranteed a red sox pennant in may of each of the last three seasons (only one of which came true).  just as a comparison, the NY Daily News and NY Post picked against the giants in both the green bay and dallas games.

by SBakerTheTouchdownMaker on Jan 29, 2008 5:55 AM EST up reply actions

yes, but in boston
they know where the reporters live... I think they'd likely be lynched if they picked against the local team...

by circusboy on Jan 29, 2008 12:02 PM EST up reply actions

long suffering?
Pal - this will be the fourth Super Bowl title in seven years for the Boston area... New York should suffer this badly.

I think the Giants had the last SB title (one) for a  N.Y. pro football team and that was back in 1991. I would characterize Pat fans long suffering my friend.

by TruePatsFan on Jan 29, 2008 5:18 PM EST up reply actions

I think he was talking about before this Pats run
I know you jumped on this bandwagon very recently, so maybe you don't know that there actually was an NFL before 7 years ago.

by potroast on Jan 29, 2008 7:24 PM EST up reply actions

Long suffering Boston fans?
Depends on what you mean by long.  Especially if you count the Celtics.

by django48 on Jan 30, 2008 2:09 PM EST up reply actions

If so...
...he would have noted that the suffering is over. It is the N.Y. teams that have fallen on hard times this decade.

And maybe you don't know, that in the entire history of the NFL, N.Y. football teams have won a total of two Super Bowls. When Sunday's game is over, they'll still be stuck at two victories. The N.Y. football past wasn't too good, the immediate future looks worse.

by TruePatsFan on Jan 30, 2008 2:39 PM EST up reply actions

Simple addition
Jets 1969 + Giants 1987 + Giants 1991.  And that's not counting pre-SB championships.

If you're gonna come over here and troll, at least don't embarrass yourself.

I forget that '87 Giants title.

you're right buddy
the pats were totally awesome before the 21st century.  then again, you probably don't remember any of those teams.

by SBakerTheTouchdownMaker on Jan 29, 2008 8:00 PM EST up reply actions

TDM
Overall - I'd say the Patriots Super Bowl history stands up pretty nicely to that of the Giants & the Jets & the Bills. I remember those teams.

by TruePatsFan on Jan 30, 2008 2:42 PM EST up reply actions

dude
WHO GIVES A FUCK ABOUT THE JETS AND BILLS?

why do you keep mentioning them? what do they have to with anything?  the jets have sucked forever and the bills are Canda's team.  i know they're your main "rivals" in that pathetic division of yours, but they really have nothing to do with the Giants.

if you really want to stack up the Pats championship history against the Giants (the kind that our buddy george cronin remembers), then your current run isn't worth dick to what the Giants have done (six titles = 1927, 1934, 1938, 1956, 1986, 1990).  but dont worry, you're halfway there.  unless bruschi, harrison, seau, and vrabel are getting any younger, you will still have a lot of catching up to do once this run ends in the near future.

oh and congratulations on your Super Bowl "history" a tradtion that's SIX whole years long!  Fuck the Steelers and 49ers...this Patriots franchise is really the flagship of NFL success!

by SBakerTheTouchdownMaker on Jan 30, 2008 4:49 PM EST up reply actions

Please...
The only reason the Giants won so much before electricity is because the Patriots weren't around to beat them down! The Giants will take a "modern" beating in this Sunday's Super Bowl.

Yes, the Steelers & the Forty-niners prior glory will sadly be forgotten as this Patriot team comes into it's own. But, the game goes on, it's new heros are crowned, it's new dynasties worshiped.

by TruePatsFan on Jan 31, 2008 1:47 PM EST up reply actions

Hubris
I have said it before and will say it again, I know lots of Patriots fans. Not one of them has even considered the possibility that the Giant's might win.

It's a little scarey to hear that a flu bug is getting passed around the Giant's roster. I do not need to hear something like, "it caught up with the three members of the offensive line on Sunday morning."

Go Giants!

My dying words will be "Go Giants!"

by wankerboy on Jan 29, 2008 9:29 AM EST reply actions

That's so awesome.
Should the Giants somehow pull off the upset of this young century, I think they should ship the book anyhow... retitled of course.  Something like "18-1: The Historic Season and a Dream Unfullfilled by New England's Nearly Unbeatable Patriots."  I might buy two!

Ugh
But I'm totally buying that book if the Giants win.

by Josh @ Big Blue View on Jan 29, 2008 11:24 AM EST reply actions

I'd buy it
just so i could scribble on it and paste eli's picture to the front of it.

Jinxes
I don't know that I believe in Jinxes, but this might be one.  Although, don't forget the Bears recorded their Super Bowl Shuffle song before they won it all, or even made it to the Super Bowl and that turned out ok.

Along the same lines, as a Giants fan living in Boston, Giant fan friends of mine and I were talking about how we might celebrate if the Giants were to somehow, miraculously pull off a victory.  We came up with the idea of a gathering amongst all Boston-based Giant fans the Monday after somewhere in downtown Boston.  However, it might take some advance notice to get a decent sized crowd.  So the question becomes if we started to plan such a thing would WE be jinxing the Giants? Would we merely be cancelling out all or some of the jinxing Pats fans and newspapers are doing by banking on a Pats win? Are we so rich with house money at this point that jinxing this game is impossible for the Giants? How likely would we be to get beat up, or at least not served by most bars? Is it a good idea?

Feedback would be appreciated.

Don't mention again
Until Sunday night after the game, and plan your get together for Tuesday, that gives you 2 days to get the word out

Facebook has groups for all the NFL teams, you could spread the word on there to all Giants fans

by Jim Schmiedeberg on Jan 29, 2008 12:41 PM EST up reply actions

wouldn't recommend it...
but probably not that likely.  but then I wouldn't recommend it in any city with a passionate sports following.  but if you're going to do it it's good you're considering doing it in the US where people are afraid of who might be armed, in europe there have been murders for far less.  but if you insist on yanking the tail of the tiger, I just hope you won't complain when it turns around and bites you. ;-) (note, that is not a threat or anything, you  just can never be sure when the crowd you jeer might have a complete a____le in it.  remember the IQ of a crowd is the IQ of the dumbest member divided by the number of people in it...

as far as jinxes go though, take this for what it's worth... there is the famous sports illustrated cover jinx.  the pats have been on the cover 4 times so far this year, (I haven't looked this week...) and they haven't succumbed yet...

but you shouldn't be afraid to root for your team where ever you are... of course I'm in seattle, and they don't seem to mind me as a pats fan, but there aren't many of me, and I'm pretty quiet and polite...
cheers.

Go back to your homes, nothing to see here
Silly, silly, silly.  Not even worth thinking about.  The NY Giants organization isn't behind that book any more than the Kraft's are behind that 19-0 book on the same site.

Just your friendly neighborhood hucksters looking for a piece of the action.

19-0
If it isn't sold out - I'll take three, one for each of my kids. We all know this kind of a season will never happen again!

Tell me it's still available...

by TruePatsFan on Jan 29, 2008 5:07 PM EST reply actions

It's no big deal
NFL shop had t-shirts and hats for all 4 teams before the Championship games were played.  This is just a case of being prepared for what is a possibility and if it does happen, they will look like geniuses for having it out for pre-order.

by Ironman63 on Jan 30, 2008 1:43 AM EST reply actions

That's not what this is
You can get one today if you want

by potroast on Jan 30, 2008 9:16 AM EST up reply actions

As marketing, it's brilliant, though.
Think about it.  If the Pats win, the stores will be awash in SB swag, and most everyone will be buying the officially licensed stuff, not unlicensed merchandise like this.  If the Pats lose, the market for this stuff is maybe a few Giants fans like us with a healthy sense of irony.

It's called getting ahead of the market.  I'm not against anyone making a few bucks.

Let's talk about the Game, OK?

by django48 on Jan 30, 2008 9:28 AM EST up reply actions

If it will make you feel better
You can play the "Whack A Patriot" game and take out your frustrations.  By the way, you might want to save this link to use it again after the game on Sunday.
