Garafolo comes to Shockey's defense
I have been a little hesitant to go down the Jeremy Shockey road here throughout the playoffs. I suspect we will spend plenty of time this off-season discussing the future of the Giants' injured tight end.
This morning, though, the Star-Ledger's Mike Garafolo has gone down that road -- challenging those who think Shockey's absence helps the Giants and that he should be traded.
Here's a little bit of Garafolo.
I have to agree with Garafolo. Shockey often frustrates me, and I've wondered about his effect on Eli, but he is still a tremendous player to have on your team. As much as I love the potential of Kevin Boss, Shockey is a guy nearly every team in the league would love to have.
So, what do you guys think? Has his absence helped Eli? Hurt Eli? Made no difference?
We probably won't be able to, but let's try to keep the question of his long-term future for another day.

shockey
to me, it's baffling why anyone would want to get rid of shockey. he is a true impact player. that is evident anytime he touches the ball. fassel knew this very well (which is why we saw all those screens to him his rookie year), while coughlin plays it conservative and uses him mostly as a blocker. losing shockey would mean the loss of one of the most dynamic players at that position in the league. maybe this post-season run being fought without his participation will make him more humble. but i just know that it would make me sick to my stomach to see him in any other jersey than big blue.

i dont think
like ive said before, shockey is a star in the right system. if theres one knock ive always had on coughlin its that he does not know how to use him properly. look at shockeys numbers under fassel compared to his numbers under TC.

Think Tiki
Shockey has certainly matured, but I want to see him go to the minicamps, and put the team first.

I'm 100% Pro-Shockey

I went to the Monday night
Now, I love Shockey's spirit, talent, etc., and this year there seemed to be less tension between them, but who really knows?
P.S. Ed, I am still waiting for that Shockey photo. ;)

Dropped passes and dumb penalties
This probably won't happen, but it would be nice if, having seen that the team is more than capable of winning w/o him, he came out next season with a better attitude toward his teammates and a commitment to curbing all the negative stuff he can bring to a game.

I'm a mugwump with Shockey. We can live with
NBA now. His reply? "They only fined you fifty dollars for punching a guy in the mouth." Believe me, that's true. Back in the day I saw more than one guy in the NBA get decked for running his mouth. In the NFL, the bootsie play took care of those who didn't follow the unwritten rules. I know most of you will think I'm a doddering old fool clinging to outmoded values. I assure, I'm well aware that I'm pretty much a stranger to the culture I find myself in. Time has passed me by, but what goes around comes around (I hope.)

Would you really want him on the other team?

Shockey
I also agree with the sentiment that hopefully Shockey will eat some humble pie as he watches his team in the Superbowl and get his butt to NY in mini-camp and stop showing Eli up on the field. He's still a great player and it would be nice to not have to fill his roster spot through the draft and use it for something else like, oh I don't know, I real safety (talking about you Butler).

Pot, I don't think we
As for showing up Eli on the field, if he does it even once, I say bench him. Let's face it, he has been pretty much a slightly better than mediocre player these past few years. It's easy to blame that on TC or the system or whatever, but you've got to look to the player first.
Yeah, yeah, Madden hasd a man crush on him, but Madden, as astute a student of the game as he is, Is as often wrong as right in his personnel observations from the broadacst booth and has often been overly enamored by colorful types like Shockey and less than enthusiastic about guys like Bavaro who quietly get the job done.
