Garafolo comes to Shockey's defense

I have been a little hesitant to go down the Jeremy Shockey road here throughout the playoffs. I suspect we will spend plenty of time this off-season discussing the future of the Giants' injured tight end.

This morning, though, the Star-Ledger's Mike Garafolo has gone down that road -- challenging those who think Shockey's absence helps the Giants and that he should be traded.

Here's a little bit of Garafolo.

I'm not buying it. And if I'm the Giants, I'm not taking the suggestions of the folks who are ready to move on and trade him. ... Look, I'm not saying Shockey is the perfect teammate. For all I know, he could have been yapping behind the scenes about his new role in this offense while keeping a straight face in public. And maybe Eli Manning is a little relieved Shockey's not out there so he doesn't feel the pressure of having to get him the ball. Fact is, I don't know. And neither do most people. But to say this team is better off without a tremendous blocker, a more-than-capable receiver and a guy whose toughness and limitless energy inspire this team doesn't make sense to me.

I have to agree with Garafolo. Shockey often frustrates me, and I've wondered about his effect on Eli, but he is still a tremendous player to have on your team. As much as I love the potential of Kevin Boss, Shockey is a guy nearly every team in the league would love to have.

So, what do you guys think? Has his absence helped Eli? Hurt Eli? Made no difference?

We probably won't be able to, but let's try to keep the question of his long-term future for another day.

shockey
it's tempting to take eli's performance in the wake of shockey's injury and subsequent absence and suggest there's a valid connection between the two. perhaps shockey did get in eli's head on the sidelines and without that overbearing presence, eli feels more comfortable and confident.  however, what has impressed me most with eli has been his improved reads, mechanics and composure in the pocket over the last several weeks. surely that cannot be attributed simply to the absence of shockey.

to me, it's baffling why anyone would want to get rid of shockey.  he is a true impact player. that is evident anytime he touches the ball.  fassel knew this very well (which is why we saw all those screens to him his rookie year), while coughlin plays it conservative and uses him mostly as a blocker.  losing shockey would mean the loss of one of the most dynamic players at that position in the league. maybe this post-season run being fought without his participation will make him more humble.  but i just know that it would make me sick to my stomach to see him in any other jersey than big blue.

i dont think
you can possibly argue that losing one of the best TE's and biggest mismatches in the league is beneficial.

like ive said before, shockey is a star in the right system.  if theres one knock ive always had on coughlin its that he does not know how to use him properly.  look at shockeys numbers under fassel compared to his numbers under TC.

Think Tiki
I am going to be a contrarian.  Remember last year, everyone said that without Tiki the team would tank.

Shockey has certainly matured, but I want to see him go to the minicamps, and put the team first.

I'm 100% Pro-Shockey
But I agree that he and Plax both should work out WITH Eli in the off season.  I also hope Shockey turns up for the game in AZ.

I went to the Monday night
game against the Jaguars last season.  The offense was out-of-sync and the Jags were romping us. Using my binoculars, I watched the sidelines while the defense was on the field to see how Eli interacted with the offensive team and, in fact, he didn't.  He was off to the side by himself or on the phone.  Shockey was jawing away at everyone and it appeared that Eli attempted to avoid even looking his way.

Now, I love Shockey's spirit, talent, etc., and this year there seemed to be less tension between them, but who really knows?

P.S.  Ed, I am still waiting for that Shockey photo.  ;)

Dropped passes and dumb penalties
Are a real problem with Shockey.  I love watching him play, but there have been far too many instances of him KILLING drives with either a big drop, or a stupid taunting penalty.

This probably won't happen, but it would be nice if, having seen that the team is more than capable of winning w/o him, he came out next season with a better attitude toward his teammates and a commitment to curbing all the negative stuff he can bring to a game.

I would be ecstatic
if by some miracle Shockey was able to walk out onto  the field on February 3rd 100% healthy and ready to block and catch passes in the end zone.  As a talent, I think he has only a handful or peers.

Another way of looking at it.
With Tiki gone and now Shockey out, maybe the absence of their big egos from the locker room was just what Eli needed to gain the self-confidence to take control of the offense.  But it is Eli's team now, and the offense that Shockey comes back to will be far different from the one that he played for this year.  That said. bring him back by all means.  He's still a special player.

Off topic, but
I just watched the highlights of the NFC Championship game on Inside the NFL and I still have chills.

I'm a mugwump with Shockey. We can live with
him or w/o him.  I lean more toward the position of Earth and drunkuncle than that of the others.  We miss him no more than we do Tiki.  Whatever Resse decides to do with him is okay with me.  Yes he provides a spark, but he doesn't have good hands, isn't a team player, and gets a lot of injuries.  It's true a lot of teams might want him and give good value for him, so Reese might decide that now is the time to unload him.  I really think his best days are behind him.  His colorful, WWF style personality has blinded a lot of fans to his flaws.  To me, all that chest thumping is the cry of a needy child--look at me, look at me.  Give me a Bavaro any day.  Of course, I come from an earlier time when boasting, taunting, flamboyance in general was not considered admirable nor was it tolerated.  I read somewhere recently about a former player was asked why there was so much more taunting in the
NBA now.  His reply?  "They only fined you fifty dollars for punching a guy in the mouth."  Believe me, that's true.  Back in the day I saw more than one guy in the NBA get decked for running his mouth. In the NFL, the bootsie play took care of those who didn't follow the unwritten rules.  I know most of you will think I'm a doddering old fool clinging to outmoded values.  I assure, I'm well aware that I'm pretty much a stranger to the culture I find myself in. Time has passed me by, but what goes around comes around (I hope.)

George,
I'm 23 and I agree with you 100%. One of my favorite players in the NBA is Tim Duncan, because he lets his play on the court speak for him, not his antics. I don't mind guys trashtalking to each other out there, but I don't like when guys feel the need to showboat. And I wish they'd lay off some of the rules and let these guys play football again.

Good to know there are some young guys around who appreciate old school values.

Would you really want him on the other team?
I think of the Giants playing a game against Shockey. I start thinking of Witten, he stands out on Dallas as a viable threat. I believe Shockey inspires that same threat to other teams. Not that Boss doesn't, be he is part of depth. Shockey is character. Character is the Giants. He is still maturing into his own and this year any quirks were just growing pains. His best is yet to come.

Shockey
I agree with the sentiment that without Shockey in the locker room Eli had to step as leader, but I also think it doesn't stop there. Haven't you noticed that ALL the receivers for the Giants have stepped up and have been making plays for Eli in this run? Shockey going down forced the rest of the receivers to step up to fill the void and now we are seeing a strength in this team that we all thought was there, but didn't materialize until now.

I also agree with the sentiment that hopefully Shockey will eat some humble pie as he watches his team in the Superbowl and get his butt to NY in mini-camp and stop showing Eli up on the field. He's still a great player and it would be nice to not have to fill his roster spot through the draft and use it for something else like, oh I don't know, I real safety (talking about you Butler).

Pot, I don't think we
have to go to the draft to replace Shockey.  Boss can do the job. Some fans like Shockey's character.  His character is his main deficit.  Do you think Belly would put up with him?  Only if he conformed to Belly's expectations as Randy Moss has done.  As you say, let's hope he has learned something and let's hope that he's not already past his prime as I suspect he is (I thought Stray was and I was wrong about that, though he can't have that many good years left, can he?) Anway, the first indication we'll get about Shockey's readiness to reform his character will be if he attends mini-camp.
As for showing up Eli on the field, if he does it even once, I say bench him.  Let's face it, he has been pretty much a slightly better than mediocre player these past few years.  It's easy to blame that on TC or the system or whatever, but you've got to look to the player first.
Yeah, yeah, Madden hasd a man crush on him, but Madden, as astute a student of the game as he is, Is as often wrong as right in his personnel observations from the broadacst booth and has often been overly enamored by colorful types like Shockey and less than enthusiastic about guys like Bavaro who quietly get the job done.

I guess i should have elaborated
Word is that the Giants were taking a very close look at the TE from MSU down at the Senior Bowl, so there are indications that the Giants do want to replace him through the draft in addition to Boss.

I'm not a bit surprised. Maybe that's why
Garafolo brought him up. I've been thinking he'd be a natural to play where he lives.  There'd be no problem in attending mini camp.  He'd behave for Parcells and could emerge as a star again if they could use him as he was used before TC appeared on the scene.  I don't think he can play to that level any more, but he can still flash his old self in spots after he catches the ball (if he catches the ball, which has become more and more of a problem for him.))

Sorry for going on at such length, ET.
I'm on the record now and will withold further comment when you open the discussion about Shockey's future after the SB.
