Bad news for the Giants?

If you believe in the SI Cover Jinx then the issue of Sports Illustrated that hits newsstands today is bad news for the Giants.

As you can see, Eli Manning is this week's cover boy. Great honor? Yes. Bad omen? Maybe. We'll just have to wait and see.

Now let's look around and see what else is being written and said.

Tiki Barber (remember him?) says he has no regrets about retiring even though the Giants have reached the Super Bowl. "I was done with football," Barber said. The Blue Screen

Where did this come from? Ex-Giants coach Jim Fassel, who took the team to the 2000 Super Bowl, has had two interviews with the Washington Redskins and could be named head coach as early as today. That's a stunner. I thought Fassel would never get another NFL head coaching job. Pro Football Talk

if tiki is done with football why is he still making his living talking about it? i think he means, 'i was done playing with the giants because i was already rich and my wife wanted me to quit, so i did after i negotiated a sweet broadcasting gig so now i dont play any more but i talk trash on people whose wives didnt make them quit"

what a blowhard.

also, fassel is an interesting hire, and i dont necessarily thing a bad one. i dont get how they pass on gregg williams tho. wasnt he being groomed as the successor? and isnt he going to make more money than fassel? maybe arthur blank will make him an offer to run that mess in atlanta.

If you can see the bottom subtitle, it says that Dr Z is picking the Giants to win. Pretty interesting article about how tough they are, the unstoppable tandem of Jacobs-Bradshaw, and the development of Eli and how this will all lead to victory. Check it out:

oh man

I'm gonna be pretty peeved if the Skins hire Fassel. I always loved him when he was here, and would root for him to do well just about anywhere, but first he goes to the jailhouse Ravens (who I still despise from that 2000 SB), and now he's gonna be back in the NFC East? I really wanted the Skins to hire an unlikable coach so I could start hating them again, but I can't hate Jim Fassel.

Also, SI can make this all right by putting Brady and his "boot" on the cover next week. And I can't remember a NY athlete falling from grace quite like Tiki. He's to us what Roger Clemens is to Boston.

Fassel

Did I see Fassel on the postgame coverage on Sunday night? Thought I did but I was in a bar and they'd turned the sound off so I'm not sure.

Fassel got kind of a raw deal here

especially with all the bad calls that screwed him in that SF game. To me he was always a likable guy who was in a little bit over his head as a head coach. I would have loved for him to come back as our OC, but I know that was never an option. I couldn't root for him to do well as coach of the Inappropriate Racial Stereotypes, but I do wish him well just as a person.

I always liked Fassel

He has a good offensive mind. Has he learned anything about handling the troops? If so, he might have a good run.
Too bad it's the Redskins, though it was far worse when Lombardi went there. He made them better from the get-go. Does anyone remember the name of the tough, smallish running back who L ID'd as being partially deaf? L figured out how to compensate for that and the guy had some great years. He used to give us fits, particularly in the red zone. Larry something?

Larry tormented us in the early seventies. He wore #43. He may be the guy you're thinking of, George. Very slipery, good runner.

Couldn't come up with last name. I rejected surnames Smith, Jones and Green. What killed me about him was that Lombardi would give this little guy (comparatively) the ball close to the goal line and he seemed to be able to bang it in every time. You've got to hand it to Lombardi that he was able to diagnose Brown's problem and take corrective measures. He took a guy who was floundering and turned him into a damned good running back. Just another aspect of his genius.
